Hello All,
I need some help here, I have looked through sevral of the posts and They have answered a lot of my questions. However, one question still comes up I am looking to change the gears in my Ford 8.8 I currently have 3.27 I need to change to 4.10's. My question is will I have to change out the carrier also is there a way to determine the number of "teeth" on my axles and does that matter. Thanks in advance for your help. I could really use this information as I have already placed on a custom lift and am running 33's so you can see the need for gears. As far as the front is concerned I am holding off on upgrading the dana 35 in the front as i am shopping for a solid 44 any ways thanks again.

First - if you have a 4x4, DO NOT REGEAR THE REAR WITHOUT DOING THE FRONT. If you accidently drop it into 4, you will lose any combination of front axles, front diff, rear axles, rear diff, tranny, transfer case, crankshaft - anything and everything attached to the drivetrain can blow.

You will need to get a new carrier when you regear from anything less than 3.55's in the 8.8". I am wrapping up a rebuild of an 8.8" where I pulled the 3.08's out and installed 4.56's with a Detroit locker. My advice is add a locker when you regear - no added cost in labor to do it since the unit is apart anyhow.

The cost to regear and add traction devices front and rear (with installation) will cost about $1500. I waited for about 1 year before doing the project so I could learn as much as I could - then do it myself (I'm cheap - wanted to save the extra money).

Hope this helped!

Correctoin,,,,,,

to correct the last statment made,,,
it is fine to regear the back,,,
just when you do it simply remove the front driveshaft untill you get the front changed to whatever your going to do to it.
as far as i am aware the carrier will need to be changed if you have 3.27's in order to go to 4.10's
not 100% sure though.
the teeth on the axles,, should be 31 spline but easy way would just be to take off the cover and count them.

yes - removing the front driveshaft would obviously fix the problem of only regearing the rear.

Axle shafts are 31 spline on the Explorer

Front carrier has to be changed when you do the job. The rear may be able to be re-used, but you may also need to cut the heel of the gears done to make it work (not fun)

On all Ford 8.8" and 7.5"s when you re-gear, you CAN reuse whatever carrier is in there as they are all the same. I've put 4.56s on a 3.08 carrier with NO problems.

Now the fronts.....that is a different story. Every Dana axle I've seen has specific carrier break points.

And like everyone else has said...

Unless you are 2wd, you need to regear the front and rear axles at the same time OR remove your front driveshaft until you can afford to regear the front.

Thankx everyone for help
incase any of you were wondering I have located a free front dana 44 with 4.10 yeah for me any ways no all i need to do is get the rear settled Thanks again
