Getting an new SUV, which is an better deal?

I'm with Majisto, I got to drive a 4.6L Expedition (pre-med faternity) into California, it was very powerful. We had 6 people in there and it still hauled.
BTW- 4Runners do not have a better tow rating:
2000 4Runner have 217 lb/ft @3600 RPMs (not bad)
2000 Explorer have 220 (OHV), 254 (SOHC), and 288 V8)
Max towing with a 4Runner- 5000lbs
Max towing with an Explorer- 6820 lbs
Just an aside
Love the Expedition, great choice though I think you would've been have happy with either one! Congrats!

Also he's looking at an 02 Explorer, not a 2000. Those numbers dont sound right. Unless the numbers I researched awhile back were wrong?

If so, 4runners are still more reliable. 5,000lbs should be enough.

I just checked MSN auto, they list the Explorer at 3500 and the 4runner at 5000.

Both are for 2002 model year. Both standard towing capacity.

You looked at the max payload for the toyota, but the standard payload for the X- if you're going to do a comparison, at least do it fair. For the 2002 X, it actually improves the max towing, unlike the 4runner.
2002 X- max towing: 7300 with the V8. Looks like the X is still on top.

...And I don't mean those crooked 1/2 @ss ones from consumer reports, those guys get everything wrong from toasters to cars. Keep in mind when seeing numbers that not nearly the number of 4Runners sold as did Explorers, thus keep it proportional. Personally, I haven't researched it, so I honestly don't know. Just from my own personal experiences of owning a 4Runner and an X, I've had better luck with the X, though the 4Runner did have a little more mileage (X=120K, 4=135K).

Reading this post i am truly reminded that although each of us see a particular scenario differently no matter what our advice the person ultimately goes with one vehicle or another based on something that is important to THEM.

some discussed price ( i agree with this, i wouldn't paid 29000 for a expedition nor 21 for a X both seem to high to me)

some discussed pick up.....

WE should have all known that the wife really was going to choose (no offense intended) based on something comlpletely arbitary...making a bed area for children when traveling.

I would have told you to go test drive an odessy (sp?) sounds like you would have been happy with a minivan and those things get better gas mileage, your wife was going to drive it anyway, 3rd row seating that both disappears and is easy to get too, reliable, 240 hp is great pick up, can tow 3000 lbs easy, and resale is GREAT.....

Course u would have to get ove the stigmae of it being a ....MINI VAN

Hondas are just as bad on auto trans's as the Explorer....They just recalled a boatload of Odysseys for trans. problems.... About the only thing you get rid of is the POS 4.0 SOHC.

Actually, if I wanted a minivan, I would get a third gen Explorer. They are really really nice but a little too non-truck-like for me.

Gee, I sure see a lot of full frame mini-vans running..

And for mini-van, I wouldn't get an Obyssey. Why not stick with the original if you want a van, and get a Grand Caravan?

Actually it's funny you said that because now that I think about it, I did see a Caravan in front of me with blue smoke coming out the back of it. I guess the Carvan is a bad choice. Their interiors are really nice and well thought out though. Guess the Chrysler bug was too strong for it.
