My 03 has had the rear end shutter problem for about 2 months now. About a month ago my axle seals began to leak also. I have 63k miles on it and no extended warranty. I've been quoted anywhere from 775 to 1400 for the repairs. I called the ford customer service number and complained. I am a lifelong ford owner and have had quite a few problems with this vehicle. In order they were......7k miles PCM needed reprogrammed (stalling) 20k miles cracked rear panel, 40k miles fried battery (result of a fried wire from solenoid to starter) needed tow to get home, 44k miles cracked heater core tube going to fire wall, 50k miles replaced stoplight switch.

I told them unless they gave me some help on the shudder and leaky seals I was buying something else. They just called and I have to pay 221.00 for the job....that's it.

If your having this problem call the number it might help.

It's good to hear they are willing to help you out, I've got on '03 XLT but only had it for about 10K miles so far, hopefully I don't have many problems. Oh and maybe you can tell us that number?

the hatch is a common thing to crack.

It's the 800 number on Ford's web site for customer service. If you have the limited slip rear end and the clutch packs have not been changed there's a good chance you will have the shutter problem. It will shutter from a take off while turning. The mechanic at the dealership stated they have been having a lot of problems with the shutter and the axles seals leaking.

Getting the differential serviced cured mine of this problem.

I have the shudder problem on my 2002 with 98000. I have just replaced the fluid in the limited slip differential with new 75/140 and additive. Jury is still out. I would think the clutch pack in the limited slip would just stop being effective when it wore out. Anybody know why it would be grabbing? I have had the right axle seal replaced twice since new. Update: It's been a week since I replaced the fluid and all symptoms are gone. I also notice that the slight howl that I could hear seems to be gone.

my 04 had the shudder at 30k, dealer replaced the clutch packs in the rear end. 53k- rear end howl. Extended warrenty covered that rear end howl T.S.B. :) I should be good to go.

But good to hear you got some kind of deal! . Thanks for sharing.

Before anyone here gets all wet in the pants about calling the number, just note than this post is over 3 years old....since that time Ford has issued the TSB for the rear howl, and I seriously doubt they will honor a deal such as the OP got over 3 years ago for this issue.

Mine was replaced under the TSB with the extended warranty back before I bought the truck, but guess what....the howl came back
