Whats up everyone,
I just ordered 4-MA Audio XE 12"s, they aren't the biggest subs in the world, (only $250)(350rms,775peak), but should get me into the 150's, I'll temporarily be running all 4 @ 2 ohms to my 5011dx, till I get another, and run each pair off one! Anyways I also got all my wiring set out, 0 guage, got a bunch of dynamat, and am going to order a few sheets of MDF. This is going to be my Spring Break project!!!
-just wanted a few opinions, had a few Q's
1. Whats the best hi-amp alternator that fits like stock, I'm looking for a good price/power ratio.
2. In terms of boxes, I am planning on building a ported box, basically taking up the whole back end of the ex. But I dont know whether to make it a large single chambered box, or a seperate chambered connected box. Which one would be better for all out SPL?, I will be tuning somewhere in the range 40-50 hz, hopefully.
--finally Im gonna take pics all through this process and will post them on the sounddomain site. I am planning to get a little creative with plexi, soooo I cant wait!!!
(I know its a little early!!, spring break is a few weeks away):D

An alternator is around $200 http://www.mralternator.com. Seperate chambers should always be used. And a ported inclosure you get you a few more dbs, if you know what the heck your doing, they are a bit harder to plan, get right, and build...

hehe... my area...

this is the fun stuff!

The explorer resonant freq is 52Hz, try to tune to 48Hz so it peaks at 52Hz.

Also, you'll still be better off rear firing, as I've found in low power it's best uip firing, but in high power it's best rear firing. Don't let the box get any closure than 16"s from the very back, that's the best spot I've found to get the biggest numbers, any closure or further it's worse. ALSO, if you're really looking for SPL on the mic and plan to compete, I suggest you put this box on 2" stubs and the rear seats down all the way.

thats my help. Also, those XEs get 7% distortion at 249watts rms, thats the good thing: you donj't need much power in reality, no joke.

thats why I got em, dont need much power, but oddly seem to win at stereo comps in the right set up. :D
also they can handle up to 775 watts past distortion, one of my car mags tested it. got ~125db out of it in a small music-ported box. I think tough I am gonna have to have the subs firing upward though, cuz of space considerations. 4-12"s across the back will be a TIGHT fit!, oh yeah, I always have my seats down for comps!! Prob what im gonna do is have the box stop just about where the rear ledges by the windows are.

ma audio gives the maximum ported size @ 2.25 ft3, ill give them that, but they say to port it @ ~33hz, not too good for sound comps, MA's spec: in a box, 2.25 ft3, 2 ports, 3" dia. each, 14.35" long, not too brilliant with this, how do I get the freq to 52 hz, lengthen the ports?

yes, basically, but you should use a program to help you calculate the length and size of the ports, you wouldn't want port noise.

let me klnow the size (width or if iot
's square tell me the deminsions) and I'll help you get the right length to get that nasty high tuning.

Also, You cannot tune it that high and play normal music, 2 reasons: it'll sounds like geniune ass, and it'll make the subs move past their limits with less power than normally needed when playing anythign below tuning, this is why people try to tune their setups to lower freqs. It allows the transient response to be flat (to an extent) and reproduce the music better, AND if you tune to 30HZ it'll be able to easily play down to 26Hz without possible bottoming out.

Also, are you saying that those subs can take 775Watts?

well, ironically, they are great subs, and CAN take that power, their MAX rating isn't a joke (so long as it's sealed of the sub gets proficient movement to cool the voice coil)

right now for testing purposes, (and inbetween setups) my friend has his 1500 rms Revolution amp at 1ohm to two 12" XEs from ma audio. well... they certainly distort and make popping noises at full blast (the VC is tapping the bottom) BUT they handle it fine.

I don't suggets it for daily driving though.
