I will be driving the Ex back and forth to school each day this winter. I drove in the snow with it last winter but I was only 10 minutes away from my highschool. It takes me about 30 minutes to drive to UNH. What kind of stuff should I carry in the back just in case? Want to make sure I am prepared for anything that could possibly happen. Thanks again guys.

tow strap
warm cloth's
shovel
jumper cables
tire chain's..(if your 2wd really no need with 4x4)

..just those kinda thing's

12"x12" planks of 3/4" plywood; good for getting you out of being stuck

this may sound wierd, but a little bit of food (like snack food) b/c you never know.

Run a search...

I rember reading last year what other people carry in theirs. They were very detailed and alot of lists...

the search...

Most of the towns in N.H. do an excellent job of snow removal. They do it fast and efficiently. If you carry a cellphone, a blanket or two and a bottle of Brandy you'll wish they took a little longer. Cheers!

salt and/or sand to throw under your tires if you get stuck on ice. wood won't do squat, we have all sliped on wet wood. cell phone is always good, blanket, warm sweater, ans what the others said. A come-along winch is also nice to have. (long story about that one, involves 14.5 inches of mud), another good bit of advice, don't take back roads! they are plowed last.

I travel a lot up north to ski or hunt so I hit a lot of snow while traveling! Heres my list that I have always kept with me and have used many times! Keep in mind that even tho the main roads are plowed pretty fast I may have to go into a 5-10 mile dirt road that is NOT plowed when I get there!

1- Chains. Even with 4 WD!
2- Shovel!
3- Sand tubes from Home Depot ($2.99) for rear weight and to put under tires for traction!
4- Tow Straps!
5- Jumper cables!
6- Flashlights (2) and spare batteries!
7- Fire Extingusher!
8- CB!
9- Cell phone!
10- Metal coffee can with matches and a candle in the can! I have used this and it works!
11- Spare W/W Blades!
12- Tool box with electrcal, duct tape and knife in it!
13- 2 extra cans of motor oil and 2 gallons of premixed antifreeze!
14- Empty gas can!
15- Blankets or sleeping bag! Man its cold when your stuck and you can't use your heater!
16- Red or yellow cloth to tie on your antenna if stuck!
17- Drinking water and snacks! If you have to eat snow always try to melt it first! People have been known to die eating too much cold snow!
18- MAP and pen, pencil and paper to leave note to where I went if I was stupid enough to leave my truck!
19- Spare clothes- Hats, gloves, warm socks, winter boots and jacket!
20- Umbrella and rain-snow pouch with hood!
21- I always keep my spare parts with me ( in my older trucks) when I change them (if there still good) like the
coil, distributor cap, rotor, fan belt or belts, hoses, clamps and W/W blades!
22- A couple of cans of flat-fix!
23- A couple of cans of radiator sealer!
24- Plastic hose connectors (you can get them cheap at Home Depot) they have different sizes for all hoses in the plumbing dept (they are temporary) but good enough for a fix and clamps!
25- Bicycle pump! Don't laugh I have used it when out of flat fix!
26- Rain- X!
27- First aid kit with instructions in it!
Remember: Battery, starter, alternator, hoses, belts, antifreeze, brakes and tires are the most important and will stop you short if any of them fail! Always check your spare tire for air! That does not mean that everything else should NOT be checked regulary!

I know that these are EXTREME for just traveling a few miles but pick out the ones that best suite your traveling! These are items that I have found out that I have needed throught the years of traveling and I have used almost all of them at one time or another in my years of traveling! Sometimes I will have to drive thru a snow storm BEFORE the plows are out! I was driving to a cabin about 20 miles off the road once and hit drifts and NOT even 4 WD with CHAINS would get me thru the drifts!
Always have good all season OR better still snow tires (if possible) on your vehicle! 4 WD is only as good as that hand full of tire that is touching the road with snow, ice or water on it!!! I may have left something out! Its LATE and I'm tired! LOL! I'll edit this post later if I remember anything else!
Of course a big cooked steak, a bottle of brandy (even tho it will thin your blood) and a good woman to keep you warm would be ok too but I don't take ANY of them with me!!! LOL!!!
Hope this gives everyone some sort of idea as to what they need if they ever get stuck in a snowstorm OR just stuck in the COLD!!!
And pleaseeeee, keep your GAS TANK FULL when ever traveling!!!
Old Mechanic!

very good list!!..i just keep a bag with as said above in the back of my 97..i don't keep any extra part's or such cause it's such a new truck.. and #16..well that would be hard with a power antenna..now im not talking about long trip's im just talking about around town..on long trip's my list get's much biger

make sure you arent a stupid driver... may people set out on trips even short ones with capable vehicles and think they are invincible...... a stupid driver in the best SUV is more likely to get stuck or in a bad situation than a prepared, calm, rational driver with a somewhat reliable rig

TRUST me i know the limit's of my truck...the AWD hurt's them some too but i know what im doing

good, i was just merely stating what is commonly overlooked....... i was in no way saying you were a crappy driver.....

and before the jokes start, i was a crappy driver, and drive too hard now as well, call me whatever you want... i dont care......

i know..no biggie..it's odd how people take thing's over the net..lol

i jsut like to avoid controversies if at all possible... seems kinda hippocritical too at the same time... like some people i will agree with and certain people in all my threads i will bash.... like a favorites kinda thing.....

Thans a bunch guys :) . I'll have to make sure I get loaded up before the flakes start to fly here.

I didn't read anything about carrying road flares!! They are a must good for warning people and starting fires. I like to throw in a few MRE's when winter starts and a good warm blanket.

Great thread! I think this thanksgiving break I'll get myself a kit together. One thing I remember from drivers ed, was kitty litter...they said it was a good traction aid if your stuck. I've never tried it just thought i'd try to add

Later
CP :D

Yep I got a rubber maid container that is flat and just fill it up and toss it in the back of my Explorer.

I need to check it but I recall it had
Jumper cables
Silver foil blanket
MRE's
Flares
Snow Pants
Tow strap
Military E-tool
12x12 piece of wood
socks
Plastic bags
flashlight
Candle
Waterproof matches
hand held emergency radio/cb
Hatchet

Plus I carry cell phone, wool blanket, Water, oil, antifreeze, tools, ratchet straps.
