After much research on replacing the exhaust on my 97 SOHC X, I went with the Gibson side swept exhaust. I was looking for something quiet but not stock. Unfortuately, I'm disappointed with the Gibson. Most of the time it sounds like a vacumn cleaner in a garbage can. Once in a blue moon it does sound ok, but that is a mystery onto itself. My question is should I replace with a Flowmaster 70 series or am I just repeating the same mistake?

i used to have the 70 series on my 01 sport previous owners put it and it wasnt that loud and deep. I wanted something real loud and deep so I went and got the dual 40 series flowmasters and big difference in sound. Now my explorer sounds louder and deeper.

I asked the muffler shop and they told me the 70 series is the quietest flowmaster. So if you want quiter get the 70 series flowmaster. I am a lot happier cause i wanted my explorer to be louder and deeper so I am happy with my 40 series.

Unfortunatly if you are looking for exhaust with sound the Gibson isn't what you are looking for. They are barely louder than stock. That is the Gibson deal though, make power without the sound. I offer Gibson, which is a good quality product. But keep in mind that the Gibson doesn't make a whole lot of sound, just power. I kinda like it myself.

It may be the side swept that's getting you. I had the Gibson that exits the rear and It actually sounded pretty good. Better than what I have now (Magnaflow)
