If the push button start does not work, due to dead key battery, or other issue, how do you start the vehicle? I thought I read in the quick guide, that there was a slot in the glove compartment to insert the key transmitter. I did not see anything in the owners manual, and do not see anything in the glove box.

It is in the front of the console that is just behind the gear shift. I had to have the salesman show it to me. You insert the entire key fob.

Thanks. Should have thought to look in there.

Looks like deerfarm took care of you just fine! If you have any questions/concerns don't ever hesitate to PM me! I hope that the Explorer is treating both of you well! :)

Inside the center console, at the very front there is this slot:

Look closely, it's in there.

Oops.. didnt pick up on center console.. duh.. thanks

It's in the manual. Driver section, starting, Back-up method of starting, page273.

"Back-up method of starting: Your IA key uses a radio frequency signal
to communicate with your vehicle and authorize your vehicle to start
when you press the START/STOP button and apply the brake pedal. If
excessive radio frequency interference is present in the area, or if the
battery in your IA key is low, it may be necessary to start your car by
inserting the IA key in the back-up slot, located at the front of the center
console storage compartment. Insert the IA key into the slot with
buttons facing out and with key ring up. After inserting the IA key into
the back-up slot, use the START/STOP button and brake pedal to start
your vehicle as usual. The vehicle should respond normally as long as the
IA key is in the back-up slot. Once the vehicle is started, the IA key can
be removed from the back-up slot, if desired."

It doesn't say what to do if IA Key is dead! Call wife I guess. Would hate to be in that situation. I can hear her now. LOL

Maybe there is a pressure point in the slot to know that the key has been inserted into the slot to allow the use of the start/stop button to start the engine and not reading for the radio frequency.

My dealer told me the slot would also charge the key fob.

I assume it will charge it through induction like an electric toothbrush.

I think your dealer was feeding you a line of BS and doesn't have a clue as to what he's talking about. The batteries in these remotes are not rechargeable, when the die, they need replaced.

2016 Explorer manual page 165 for key fob location.
Welcome to the Forum.:wavey:
You do realize that the post you replied to is almost 5 years old?;) Not that it's a problem. You'd be surprised how many times members will reply to a post that has been brought back to life.
It would be helpful if you added the 'trim' level (Base, XLT etc) to your profile so we can see it in the margin when you post. That could help members some times when replying to any concerns/questions you may have since not all trims have the same features.
Thanks for the link to the picture. Ford didn't have that in the 2011 Manual.
