Next month I getting Married and we are then going on our honeymoon to Lake Tahoe. We're gonna go from LA up the coast toards San Franscico to Tahoe then back home through Yosimitte. We'll be in Tahoe for about a week.
Now here's the Question? Which "ex" do I take? Her's (sport) has about 30k less miles on it, and SOHC and cruise control. Mine (4 door)has over 100k on her OHV but 4x4 and no cruise? I have chains that will fit on her "ex" but will not fit mine. (31's)

Let me know what you think?

If you're sticking to the roads and have decent tires then you shouldn't need chains. I say go in whatever is more comfy, probably hers.

You could always swap tires and shackles for the trip ;)

I have done that trip and know the roads. 101 up the coast has alot of curves about San Simeon and up so you wont be using CC much and you will probably get stuck behind a slow driver. I-80 in to Tahoe may require chains; you have to have them if the CHP decides it's nessecary!Take them with you. I'm not sure on the road to Yosemite because I have only done that in the summer but according to the maps some roads are closed during winter so I would call the Park Rangers to see what roads are open this time of year. You are going to be doing a lot of driving so I agree with Alec on taking the comfy ride. If you are taking the 5 back home then you will definitely be using CC; it' one long boring straight shot down to LA.

Congrats!
I make this trip a couple times a year just because me and the wife love Tahoe.

I haven't ever needed chains up there but I have needed 4wd a couple times. I am a big believer in Murphy's law. If you have a 4wd and don't take it, you are gonna need it. If your truck hasn't given you a reason to think it won't make it, take the 4wd. JMO. I know they are expecting snow up there this week.

BTW, like they already said, the drive home is boring as hell.

Like smashboxed said, if you take the scenic route (which I would advise, unless its night time) you wont be using CC. I was up in Yosemite 6 weeks ago and if you didn't have 4x4 then you need chains. May not be that way now or in a month but you never know. So with that said, its up to you.

hhhhmmmmmmmmm...

4x2 and chains or 4x4 and l/s. I think I'm gonna say we'll take hers and if I see there will be snow before we leave then we'll take mine:D

Hello? It's your honeymoon! Dragging along any ex would just be asking for disaster with the new wife.

I know, I know, it was a bad joke, but somebody needed to say it :D

BTW, congrats :)

I'm thinking that your chance of seeing any significant snow in April is pretty remote. Usually they don't see all that much in March. Dec - Feb are the heaviest snow months.

Of course, if you don't bring the 4wd you will guarantee a freak April snowstorm ;) :D

AHH, beat me to it. Was the first thing I was gonna say.

P.S. Congrats in advance!

It's a yearly trip for me and I have a 2wd. I would take her sport and the chains to be comfortable and safe. Have a great trip!

I've been to Yosemite about 1,00 times. They REQUIRE CHAINS EVEN IF YOU HAVE 4X4.

Depending on what way you go to Yosemite, I imagine the Northwest entrance, make sure your brakes and fluid are in good operating order. My last time there on the very last stop in to the valley my brake fluid had fried and the pedal went to the floor. Good thing it was last stop too.

You probably will not run into any harsh snow-ice conditions anyway so you may not need them. However, in either case 4x4 or not bring chains.

Congratulations and happy honeymoon/marriage.

Brian

It is true that even if you have 4wd you must carry chains if they have chain controls on. They may ask to see them, however I have not had anyone ask me to show that I was carrying chains with the Explorer.

If the conditions are severe enough to require chains and 4wd, CalTrans will probably close the road. Therefore, if you bring 2wd and chains you may actually have to chain up, if you bring 4wd and chains, they will close the road before you would actually be required to use them.
