2003 Sport Trac XLT 4x4
Hello all,

Well really got some bad news today and realized I was right. Here is some history on the matter.

Bought my Sport Trac earlier this year, well lets say my dad picked it up for me while I was at Military school so I had to work with him and the seller Via Email. So I never got to drive or really see too much of the truck before hand. I saw that it was T-boned earlier around 2007 but everything since then had been "Fixed". My dad was able to tell me that the rims were pretty beat up and he could tell what side the truck had been hit because that rim was the most banged up and the inner splash guard was missing but the frame looked ok and it should be good to go. So I told him to use my money and get it.

Well since then I have changed a lot on my truck, and have noticed since the first time I drove it that the passengers side wheel (Rear) was shaking. I was pretty convinced that the rim wasn't balanced or bent (Side the truck was hit back in 07). So I got to school and around VT for about a month with it and finally got her home. I put new rims on and noticed it still had that shake and my friends would tell me they could see it shake and it looked almost as if the tire was about to fall off :eek: So I brought it to my tire guy and he said the studs on the DRIVERS side rear tire looked as if the tire had come off at one point... odd... but the passengers side looked to be fine so they weighed and balanced that tire again.

So... I still have the shaking and you can still see my wheel wobble. I did a lot of searching the internet and found a lot of "Broken or bent" axle threads and it sounded a lot like my problem. This got me pretty worried to be honest. So I mentioned this to my dad and we had it brought down to the shop again and the mechanic confirmed that the axle was indeed "Bent or broken". Great... but...

I can not feel the wobble at lower speeds <50MPH but the wobble is present just about all speeds. However when you have the truck in the air there is no play in the axle on that side like it is snapped. Which leads me to believe it is bent on the Passengers side rear. :(

So my plan is to open up the pumpkin this weekend and see if there are any shards of metal or any obvious signs of something wrong and go from there. Any suggestions or ideas? I have a feeling I will be replacing that axle, I am a wrench head and like a challenge however I have never done any gearing or rear end work such as this by my self.

Hope someone can help! Thanks! :(:salute:

If the axle is bent it might be worth just getting a junk yard rear assembly and bolting it in so you do not have to worry about any other hidden issues.

Silly question but have you rotated the tires to see if the wobble moves to another corner of the truck? If it moves it could just be the tire that has a wobble (they still balance but vibrate like a mother)

Best way to tell if you have a bent axle and or wheel is to jack the truck up, set it on blocks or stands securely and put it into drive (4wd high if a 4wd as well) to check the front. You'll be able to see it right away.

I hit a patch of black ice a couple years back and hit a 10" tall curb, bent the right rear wheel, axle and axle housing, in turn destroying my spiders gears and limited slip differential from the drive to home and then my buddy's shop. I thought that the wheel was just bent (it was totally caved in). I ended up swapping a 8.8" axle from a '99 Mountaineer with 10k miles on it (swapped my brakes onto it since I had just replaced all the brakes).

It's not hard to replaced an axle but make sure it's just the axle, ALOT of hidden damage can be cause when a vehicle gets t-boned. Make sure the axle perches, shackles and shackle mounts are in correct position and that the axle itself is centered. There's pictures and more info in my thread about "black ice and curbs equal bent wheels and axles".

Yikes! Well I can see the leaf springs and the shackles have been replaced. I changed the shackles last weekend to the warrior explorer ones to lift the truck and noticed the bolting hole didn't allign perfectly like it did on the other side. So that was a red flag for me...

I'll give your thread a look at very soon. Been so busy this weekend and going into a hetic week here as well...

Thinking, I think my axle is bent very slightly that's what throws the wheel off. It's only the passengers side rear tire. Let me try and get a video up of the tire but no promises.

Thanks for all the help so far, going to get down and dirty tomorrow and take a better look. Does any one know the diameter for the fuel filler hose? Mine is leaking like crazy! Thanks guys

I'm not sure what the diameter is but they should have it on rockauto.com cheaper then at the dealer. I don't think the parts store will have that item, I could be wrong though.

I checked rock auto and couldn't find it... Ford has it for a whopping $200...

Can't find that dang part so I'm going to measure the tube and buy a generic one... As for the axle it is bent and is getting replaced in a shop... For anyone reading this thread and wondering if their axle is bent check out the guide nipples that are exposed in the plate that sits on both sides of the axle that have your shock and leaf springs attached to the axle. This clearly showed my axle was WAY bent as the nipple wasn't even close to the guide.

One would think an axle was a tough hunk of steel, not so. Last 3 vehicles I fixed had bent axles, two Tracs, a Ranger and F150.

Yeah, kinda a shame! You would think they would be stronger! Well she goes to the shop on Wednesday to get fixed so that problem will be over!
