Hey ya'll! I'm parting out a 98 Explorer. I have NO CLUE what is good or bad. I'm going to use the heads, 4R70 Trans and the limited slip rear end on my 89 Ranger 5.0 swap. Once I clear off everything anybody wants I'm going to sell it for scrap. It's an Eddie Bauer Edition. I have rebuilt another 5.0 engine from a 92 F150 so the short block is available along with all the 4x4 gear. My engine is completed now and ready to go into the Ranger. I'm using a Sniper EFI and Holley ignition along with an aftermarket trans controller so I won't need ANY of the wiring or electronics out of this Explorer. I think doors and windows are all intact and the interior is filthy from exposure but in decent shape. I think all the EB wheels are also good. I'll gladly Facetime with anyone who might like a better look at anything. I will not refuse any offer greater than scrap value. I'll work with anyone to get parts to them but at BUYER'S EXPENSE. I would just hate to scrap something that someone needed for their build.

Hi Dan, are you in West VA, and what is the mileage of that 98? I could use the engine/trans wiring harness if you can take it odd gently(it's all brittle of course). How are you about packing a transfer case, the AWD? I've shipped one myself and it's not the biggest, but it is still heavy. I used a plastic storage container like Walmart sells in many sizes, whatever is a just a little bigger than the item. If you might be up to that packing I may need another AWD TC.

Hello Don. Yes I am in WV really close to Huntington. If you're not in a huge hurry I can certainly pull and ship whatever you would want. I also have 2 military shipping containers I could sell you one of to ship TC in. I have no clue as to the mileage. The car was abandoned in a yard in the country where a house burned down. The car was no where near the fire so no damage that way. The keys were in the house and lost in the fire. It sat for 5 or 6 years. I've never tried to power it up as I was only interested in the parts. If the harnesses are undamaged I'll get them pulled for you. If you have an interest in doing so you could drive up here and look everything over as you and I pull it. Its a 4 hr drive from Knoxville.

I can also pull it apart and Facetime with you to examine the innards.

What does the odometer show, and does the truck look like it matches the mileage? I'm not in a hurry but I could use the engine/trans harness, the AWD transfer case, and the air shock compressor that is mounted above the spare tire. I have a 99 with the rear air leveling and a spare compressor would be nice to have.

Don, Sorry I didn't see this! I must have my notification settings a bit wrong. The truck is very rusty on the bottom where it sat in a yard abandoned for a long time. Saturday, my sons removed the TC, Tranny, engine and rear end. ALL the bolts came out surprisingly easy. Popped the cover on the diff and it looks like new inside. If the rust hasn't deteriorated the outside of the housing too terribly I'm going to use it and the tranny. TC has some indication of a shaft seal leak. I stuck it in the garage for safe keeping. I have neither the bench space nor the physical ability to open it myself right now but you are indeed welcome to come do it yourself. I know I said I would but my health has taken a dive in the last week. If I recover I'll certainly do that for you. The short-block is available too and I'll let it go for scrap price. I don't know if you need any of it but the front diff and all the suspension up there is available. I think the only broken glass are the 2 driver's side door windows. There may be some decent interior left too. It'll be moldy but should clean up.

My sons are of that generation that thinks that everything that isn't new isn't valuable. They likely cut a lot of the wiring rather than take 10 seconds and release the latches on the connector. It is supposed to rain today so I won't be able to look until tomorrow. Let me know if you're still interested.

Dan

Good work on making progress, anything is positive these days. What mileage did the odometer show? That tells a lot about used parts life, left. Drain the transfer case and look carefully at the fluid, how much and what color etc. The rear end is the same, it sounds like that was not long ago serviced.

The wiring condition is mostly about how it's handled, broken clip ends are trivial, yanking on old brittle wires is terrible(it breaks wires inside the insulation, or almost breaks it and it fails soon after reused.

CAR IS GONE TO THE CRUSHER! My son sent a rollback to get it and I knew nothing about it. It was gone when I got back. I do still have the TC and the short block available. Engine harness is still on engine. You can have it if it's worth anything to you. There was no way to tell odometer reading as we never had a key. I assumed it had an electronic digital odometer.
I'll drain what's left in that TC but most came out when tranny was disconnected. At least that's what it appeared to be from where I was sitting.

1998 should have been an old school analog odometer.

MY BAD! I didn't even look. I did open the door on it yesterday and looked at those Eddie B. leather seats. What a waste!
