I have a 1999 Ford Explorer with the high output SOHCV6 engine. It was originally sold new in Colorado, I live in Kansas and bought this one from the local Ford dealer. Under the hood is a sticker for a Ford authorized PCM reprogramming. The info says the PCM was reprogrammed on 12/00 to new part number YUF12A650AFB. Any idea what the difference is over how the stock PCM was programmed? I am the new guy here and am looking for more performance but I want to know where I am now. Anybody know anything about this official Ford upgrade? It was done at a Ford dealer in Colorado (?) and was authorized by Ford, so the sticker says....Thanks in advance Randy

Im pretty sure it just means it was reflashed due to some problem with the original program. Coulda been a variety of things, nothing to worry about though. You just need to use that new number for the program if you order a custom chip like from Apten

Ford issued a recall several years ago for some Explorers that came equpped with a 3.73 axle that had the speed profile programmed into the PCM for 4.10 axles. The engines in Explorers with a 4.10 axle turn a bit higher RPM than those with a 3.73 axle. Having the profile for a 4.10 when the vehicle was equipped with a 3.73 allowed the vehicles to exceed the maximum speed rating of the tires (for those daring enough to try). There was also a TSB issued back in '98 that involved reflashing the PCM due to the transmission staying in high gear when coming to a stop. The recalibration on yours could have been either of these or possibly another one for a different reason.

Since you're the local Ford guy, I'm going to run this past you.

I recently put on a BL and when I was having the Cam tensioner assemply done I asked about recalibrating the speedo etc. Some people said I could do it with a $7 gear, other say I need the electric converter. The Ford shop said that a PCM reprogram might do it, but they thought it might mess stuff up worse.

I do have the program with the tranny as described above....or so I think.

when traveling on the highway 70+ and coming to a quick stop, the engine will bogg when you try and go again. It's not a problem except for the two times I've been racing to work.

What's your opinion? Flash or live with?

Also, I do have a similar sticker about flashing, but I don't know what the date/codes are on it.

Thanks, for the information, I guess the next step is to look into the performance chip and how they work. Randy

tenikiwon - replace your speedometer gear. Yours takes the same type as mine. The price has gone up to $10 and some change now though. Pull your VSS out of your transfer case and note the number of teeth and color of the gear that is on your stock one. Put your VSS back in. Let me know your stock tire size and your current tire size and I'll tell you which gear to get. It litterally takes five minutes or less to remove the gear and put it back in. It is held in by one 10mm bolt. Look for the item pictured below between your transfer case shift motor and gas tank.
