Got 2nd explorer yesterday!!!!

Hi all,

Well as the subject read I now have 2 explorers. I have my 96 2x4. and now to the family is a 97 XLT 4x4

My ? is this, I dont know any of the work that has been done on this truck. I due know it has the 3.73 gears, not sure of the front yet. But this weekend I'm going to go through and change all the fluids and hoses etc. this truck has 118,000 miles on it.
I looked at the trans fluid last night and it smelt bad,and was a really oil like color, so i'm guessing this has NEVER been changed, I dropped the pan, horrified to what i might fine, but beside the bad color of the fluid now metal filings or anything.
So I need to change this fluid out, I have read and read about doing a complete flush on a high milage x tranny is bad to due, so how can I change this all out?
I though of gettitng a drain plug for the tranny and every other week draining that, then added new fluid back in, until the tranny fluid is back or close to clean as possible.

mine looked the same on my 92 I just installed a drain plug and dropped the tranny fluid once a month untill it all cleared up

Congrats on the second ex.If it is 4x4 the gears should be the same front and back

did you use reg trans fluid or synth

I used regular trans fluid and I change my fluid three to four times a year,filter change once a year.
