Hey,

I got two new converters put on my X today. My X has 137k on it and had the original converters that were bad when I bought it.... three years ago. When I went to get gas I noticed a horrible smell. I've never had converters put on, actually... I've always had them removed, but I can't do that with this one. My question is, is the smell all the backed up carbon and gunk freeing up and coming out? I stopped by AutoZone after I gassed up and poured a can of seafoam in my gas tank. Any help is appreciated!

has nobody had new cats put on? Just curious, I just wanna make sure my ex is going to run right and that the exhaust shop did a good job.

Catalyltic converters do have a smell- they are ceramic bricks with thousands of tiny holes in it. The exhaust gases heat the ceramic, then as exhaust passes through the converter, any unburned fuel is consumed by the heat, reducing emissions. This sometimes makes a rotten egg, or sulfur smell, its normal, and should go away.

thanks for the reply. I didn't think it meant much, but this is my first vehicle with cats on it, so I didn't know for sure.

Thanks again,
Cody

Nope, they smell that way when hot. Heavy footedness will cause it sometimes. :)
