Help, please....

I want to mount my Garmin III Plus GPS on top of the center of the dash on my 99. There is a plastic trim surounding the AC vents and stereo; I want to mount to the top of this trim. My question is: how do I remove the trim so that I can install my mount?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.....

I don't want to JUST DRILL into anything. I want to remove the trim to determine if the mounting hardware that i use will not interfer with the AC vent operation.

Any udeas how to remoce it?

Al, if your 99 is like my 98, all you have to do is remove two screws. They are located in the piece of trim, right above the climate controls. Once the screws are out, you can pull the trim panel away from the dash. The radio and everything else will come with it. Hope this helps.

Thanks so mucj for the kind help. I shall go take a look soon.

I learned my lesson the hard way about not "just drilling" without looking first :). Which is why I've got an extra hole in the dash of my explorer :). In my 94, to get that piece off it was held in by a series of clips, just basically moved around the piece with a flat head screwdriver and when I found a clip, popped it out.

Project complete!

I was able to drill and use 2 self taping screws to mount on top of the center trim.

The GPS works great in its new location.

Thanks for the help, guys....

my idea was great!!!! it worked just drill into the trim!!! woohoo!!!!! :)

NOT A CHANCE. I would NEVER just drill into anything.

I removed the trim and measured the clearance.

Measure twice ( or more ) and drill once. Makes for a neat installation,

NEVER "just drill"....

i know, i was kidding hence all the smiles....i meant to check for clearance and just drill after that..... i thought you wanted to remove the panel to integrate a mount into the dash......drilling into stuff blindy isnt good... my dad did that for some phone line @ our house and cuased a blackout for half an hour!

Al, try to get us a pic, pleaaaaase!! I have been trying to find a decent mounting spot for my 3+, that holds up a little better than the velcro. Plus, I'm a big fan of putting holes where no one else will know, in case I ever get rid of it.

I mount my GPS III+ to my steering column using a 2' long 1" wide velcro strap though the GPS III+ dash mount. I cut a slit in the vertical portion of the mount to slide the strap through. I glued the strap to the horizontal portion of the mounting bracket (not the part that clips onto the GPS) so that there would be no chance of the bracket sliding around. Next I wrap the strap around my steering column and finally mount the GPS to the bracket. The advantages to doing it this way is it only takes a few seconds to unscrew the mounting screw so it doesn't get stolen, it is right in front of the speedometer so it is easy to see (especially at night with the light on) and it is easily portable to the many different rental cars that I use when traveling. The antenna works fine however it does block the speedometer from 0-35 MPH and from 70-120 MPH so I usually display the speed on my GPS.

I initially had it screwed into the trim around the A/C & radio however the vibrating from off-road made it next to impossible to see, also being up higher it caught a lot of glare which made it even more difficult to see.

here's the mount on my F-150... it blocks the speedometer over 80, block the tachometer under 500, and blocks the display for what gear I'm in. By the way, check out the altitude showing on the gps, thats at my house :).

I did the exact same thing Robert did to mount it. It's worked excellent so far.

I mounted mine to the console where the Kleenix box is. I didn't have to drill any holes at all.

I have my pictures on Photopoint os you have to click on the link

true, but hten you gotta take your eyes off the road to look at it. I know, he put it there so his wife could watch the road, bla bla but I drive by myself and it'd be a bad thing to take my eyes off the road for a few seconds. Where its at now, I can see the road and the GPS at the same time.

Yea, Where I have mine is great because I hardly ever go anywhere without Sandy so she's the navigator, I just do the driving. Matt, you really need a co-pilot, they can take care of all that stuff and let you just do the driving, plus when you're hungry or thirsty, they can get you food or drink. You don't have to be married, I'm sure that there would be alot of people who would want to crew for you in exchange for a fun and exciting day of wheelin' with you and Vegas.

Sorry for the delay, someone "bowwowed" my digital camera.
