Just joined this forum to start troubleshooting several problems on my '98 Explorer XLT w/150,000 mi. Biggest problem is the transfer case will not shift into 4xauto. 4xH and 4xL are working fine, however, can't take it on the road until I get auto back.
Looks like a tremendous amount of advice posted, and my first trial will be following the thread for rebuilding a shifter motor. Sounds like that is the culprit. Before I remove it, though, I will check the computer in the rear storage compartment and then give the shifter a "light" tap or two with a hammer.
Will definitely have to resist my normal impulse -- if a hammer doesn't fix it, get a bigger hammer!
