Hi, I have replaced three of the four wheel bearings over the last year and a half with no issues. About a month ago right before a trip to disney I decided to replace the last one (passenger rear) even though it wasn't showing any symptoms. I figured it would be good insurance on a 2000 mile trip.
This one was a Bear to get out. The axel was frozen inside the hub. I tried a puller, heat, finally two sledge hammers ( one resting on the axel while hitting it with the other) got it to move. Then the puller pushed the axel right out.
I had the bearing pressed in at a garage around the corner, and put her all back together. while we were putting it together however, I guess we hyperextended the cv joint and we had to "play" with it to get it back in it's place. After that everything seemed fine. We drove to Disney about 1200 miles.
After witting in the parking lot for a week down there, on our way out I noticed the noise. It's a rotational noise that increases with speed. It's not a constant hum like the previous wheel bearings. If I'm going about 30 - 35 and I turn a certain way ( i can't remember left or right) I can get the noise to almost completely go away. The noise was present the whole way home.
Took it to two local garages and they both said it was rusty rotors ( that little outside lip of rust) that was causing the issues. I thought they were nuts because you think it would have worn off on that long of a trip. So i put new pads and rotors on the rear, and it didn't fix it.
The boot on the CV joint that we hyperextended looked intact. Does anyone know if that could be my problem or anything else you might no of? This car is on it's way out the door and I don't want to start throwing new parts at it just trying to fix the problem.
Thanks.
