unfortunately, an unknown grinding could be from a couple of things.....problem is, you only have a noise, not a location. Bit of an ambiguous question, but I'll try to help. Where does the sound come from? does it sound like it's emanating under the hood? from the rear end? from under the seat your sitting? location makes a BIG difference when determining problems associated with noise.

is it a faint grinding? does it have a rhythm to it? does it happen at all when you turn the steering wheel?

Personally I would check all your fluids for signs of grittiness.

Another test you could do would be to engage the emergency brake while it's in drive and open up the hood, walk around the vehicle to listen for that tell tale grind.

sorry i forgot to say when you pop the hood you can't hear it but it is loudest in the car i had climbed under the explorer and it is hard to find the location but it sort of sounded like it was coming from the tranny extension housing but when i slide towards the fire wall it sounds like its coming from there. the hard part is it only does it sometimes. i checked power steering fluid it i dont think its that. thank you for your help. oh and i did get it to do it for alittle with dong the e brake thats the only reason i know as much as i do but underneath the truck there is to much echo. from inside it sounds like more from the fire wall.

oh yeah if it starts grinding i can put it into neutral or park and put it back to drive and it wont grind until i drive some and stop again.

i was wondering if it could be the torque converter. is there a way to check if thats the problem before purchasing a new one. thanx for all input.

yeah but not as constant what was your problem?

My tranny is thrashed so I figured it's either that or the torque converter....havent heard it in a long time though.

Its worth a shot to check the heat shield on your cat too... sometimes they break loose and rattle.

while driving theres no other problems pulls good through all gears exept 4th doesn't work do to 3-4 solenoid bad but could it also be a bad tcc solenoid not disengaging the torque converter upon stoping, cause i have to drive a little and stop in drive. itdoes shift alittle rough like the tcc might not work properly. thanks for responses they are very appreciated

Funny, my 4th gear doesnt work either....

My TC locks up ok still though. Lost engine braking as well too...does yours still engine brake ok?

yeah it seems to still. does that mean that the tcc is still good?

Say you're cruising and you let off the gas, if the revs stay put, you're OK, but if they drop to idle when you let off, its got more issues than you think.

That has nothing to do with the TC though, as long as it locks and unlocks OK it should be in OK shape.

revs do stay put, so probably the torque converter?

Thats what I thought when mine started making the noise but its still going.

did you replace any thing? i will get a mechanic stethiscope and check out exactly what part it sounds like once i get a chance

Havent replaced anything so far....but with 292k on the tranny it cant last forever.

If i was keeping the truck i wouldnt worry about mine but im trying to sell and people dont like grinding noises. i love my ex but need money more.
