so the truck will be warmed up and while i'm stopped at a light i can hear a groaning sound kicking on and off every once and a while, well maybe a more often then that but still... it's not the AC, could this be related a bad DPFE? just got the truck it shouldn't sound like that. 96 xlt

The DPFE has nothing to do with a groaning noise. The only sound that would make is a ticking noise, and thats if one or both of the hoses falls off.

any ideas as to what that sound might be then????

"Groaning sound" is too vauge. Track down where its comming from, as groaning could be several things.

Listen closely to your IAC and see if the sound is emanating from that location.

Good luck ....

Pretty vague description, but the idle control valve is a good bet.
Give it a clean up.

Could be the steering pump or a dry idler bearing for the fan belt or the water pump.

great, thanks for the input, i'll look into it and get back later. thanks again!

Does it happen when the HVAC system is off or in vent (panel) mode? If not, but does it in every other position, could be your compressor groaning when it kicks on.

nope, it happens when everything is off and i'm just ideling. it happens more often when i'm in drive at a stop light or stopped. it seems to quit when i put it in park, but even still it makes the groaning sound sometimes in park. the sound isn't very loud, but it just doesn't sound right.

My truck has done the same thing since I bought it. It used to be more vibration than noise, but has been getting louder lately. Turning off the HVAC has no effect, and shifting to neutral or park stops it for about a minute, then it cones back. It's very intermittent, so I've never managed to pinpoint it anywhere.

If HVAC different settings have no effect, then I'd bet on the IAC.

A little off topic, but a lighter moment. Some of the thread titles can make you laugh if you have a warped mind... like the recent one "Stuck in limp mode". This one made me want to suggest you check the undercarriage for a pedestrian. Sorry.. just hadda share it.

I get the same noise when I'm stopped, it sounds like its coming from the rear.. I also notice a ticking noise from the hood, figure its time for a tune up
