I love my explorer, but with all these trips you guys have been going on i feel left out with only being 2wd. My old 1980 toy 4x4 is sitting in the front of the house. I want to start making it a nice offroad vehicle. It has the straight axle in the front. What would be a good start for it? As of right now clearance doesn't seem like a big prob right now. Should i look at putting lockers on it? Or atleast in the front. I know its a Toy. but you guys have scene alot of them and have a better idea on them than i do. Thank you for the help...Also where are some good toy sites..(I'll keep them a secret)..I'm still working on my Rig too.

Brian, dont feel to left out. I know what you mean though when it comes time for trip time and only having 2wd. There is a trip planned here in the Texas area where they said that they dont want any 2wd out on the trip (which I didnt understand, unless they just dont want to help when the 2wd gets stuck) Anyways have fun with what ever you decide to do. Also, can you get me some pictures of each component on your fabtech lift as I am trying to figure a way to add it to my 6 inch skyjacker lift to make a 10 inch suspension lift. Let me know. Your truck is nice though so dont feel left out.

Hey its always good to have two vehicles. :) Ones a beeter and the others for go right? Thats the way I am anyway. I got an Escort for go and the Explorer is my beater. :) Anyways check out http://www.pirate4x4.com and go to their bulliten board and look at the Yota section. I am sure you can find all kinds of info there. Like how to replace a birfield and fun things like that. :) I think http://www.off-road.com has a yota section too but I have never looked at it so I am not sure as to its usefullness.

Brian,
I'm looking at taking my truck eventually to Donohue racing and having them make some new i beams for me. Was Looking to get about a 7 inch lift with the new beams and having them extend an extra 3 inches per side. Should have some mad front end travel then. I have some pics here at work that i'll send.. The only prob is that there HUGE. I took them with out digital camera here at work.

Check out http://www.off-road.com/toyota/trailtoy/sep2000/ the article and pics are about a build-up of a toy. Also check out All Pro Offroad, the link is at the bottom of the Toy build-up page. I know how it is. Although my Explorer is 4x4 which I use on moderate trails, my beater 4x4 is a 1942 Cj-2a J**P (actually a MB) which I will use on extreme trails.

I'm not mad, so you gotta promise me you won't be either. Take some measurements and swap that straight axle into your explorer. You could always get a cheap beater like Ryan got. I know you'd have to work on the front D-shaft problem but it would make for an interesting swap.

Just a thought.

Brian, here's what I would do. Find out what gearing it has. Drop in a locker in the back and a Tru-trac in the front. Put some mud tires on, maybe 31's, or larger, depending on the gears. You'll be fairly unstoppable!

Early Toyotas are pretty good the way they come but if you want to go nuts the sky is the limit! I know a guy who has a stock '81 with 32" tires and the thing is almost unstoppable in the mud. I'd say go out and play with it a bit before you decide to make any modifications. It is better to find out by doing than by guessing.

Thanks guys. I think i'm gonna make a run out to truckhaven once it gets a little cooler. I'm gonna take my rig and my dad is gonna take the toy. We'll see how it does and go from there. The toy has stock 4.56 gears in it. I know when i put in 4 lo it crawls pretty good. I cant stall it when i drop the clutch. I'll keep you guys posted.
Thank you again,
