Greetings to everyone.
I inherited a 2001 Explorer Sport 4WD recently, when my brother Mike died earlier this year. Other than tires, it's pretty much stock -- 2 doors, 4L V6, automatic. He loved this ride, but he barely logged 5K miles in the past 2 years as he battled his illness. I'd like to do right by him and give it a little refresh, then use it as my day-to-day around town drive (and I'm in snow country) and as a camping and fishing rig.
Body is in great shape, except for running boards that seem a bit loose. Engines sounds strong. Tranny and transfer case shift solid. Suspension rides fine, although rear seems a little soft and saggy. Interior is great, with a CD and a casette (making this middle-aged guy happy), but the driver's seat seems to have an odd position (base too high in the front, with no adjustment I can find) and I'm missing that pull-out soft bag for the center console.
I'm fairly handy as far as garage mechanics go, and I'm eager to hear what anyone has to offer about some basic must-fix items or really smart upgrades that can make the most out of this ride.
Thanks in advance to everyone. I'll be reading all I can find around here, and look forward to sharing a few refresh/upgrade success stories.
