Hard shifting between 2-3 and 3-4

2000 4.0 SOHC:

This problem just started happening yesterday. Shifts fine between 1st and 2nd, and 4th to 5th, but 2-3 and 3-4 the whole car lags and jolts when it shifts. I drove it today and the problem went away. Maybe there was just a clump of snow jammed under the car somewhere that has since melted?

Any ideas?

Sounds like a clog in one of the valve bodies. When was the last time the tranny was flushed and filter changed?

Dont know, bought it used.

Thats on my list of to-do's, maybe I'll have to bump it up a few notches now...

The problem has gone away though, it was just that one day it was a real problem. Its been shifting smooth as butter for the past week now. I dunno...

I think that you may have a torn valve body gasket. It's pretty common. There is a service kit available from Ford that updates the valve body, gasket and separator plate.
