Harmonic balancer install

I have a 2012 XLT, 2.0, and the harmonic balancer has separated. Do I have to pull the valve cover to hold the cams in place or can I just pull the starter and lock the engine at TDC for a reinstall? Also, I read a lot of info on the 20th tooth for crank pulley install but don't know where the reference is. 20th tooth from where?? Thanks in advance for helping.
