Hello -
2007 EB, 4.0 v6, 125k miles
As some of you may recall, few weeks ago I asked if it's normal for the harmonic balancer to wobble while engine is running. While there is always some vibrations, what I had on our 07 was way more than that.
Not to have this happen:
I decided to be proactive.
Harmonic balancer: 8L2Z-6B321-C, $ 84 plus shipping from one of the online Ford dealers.
TTY bolt M12x1.50, E7RY-6A340-B, about $ 10 at your local dealer.
Saturday morning, my 17 year old got in there and here are things he had to remove:
Drain the radiator few inches below the upper hose level, remove the upper hose, radiator overflow tank, upper radiator shroud, fan & clutch assembly, reposition the PS reservoir.
He was also replacing the tentioner assembly, and the idler pulley so that gave even more room to work.
Using a cheap HF pulley, the crankshaft pulley came off rather easily. You need to leave the old bolt in so it serves as a support for the pulley. We did it in 2 steps, pull the balancer, then loosen the main bolt out a little more and then use the puller again. According to the specs, the puller mounting holes in the old balancer should have been M8x1.25 but the bolts did not want to thread easily, could have been 5/16.
You will also need a 4" long M12x1.50 bolt to start pushing the new balancer onto the cranshaft. The factory bolt is too short to get it going.
Old balancer with visible cracks, it was on its way out.
It was seperating on both sides:
Removal:
Once you remove the shroud and the fan, there is plenty of room to work around.
Hope it helps someone one day.
PS: The torque for the bolt is 33 ft-lbs plus 85 degrees
