Im thinking along the lines of the ones on Jeeps/Toyota's that run outside by the front windshield? How about one that gets air from the front grill? It also has to be removable for smog purposes for us Californians.

If you want a snorkel, people have made those, or adapted snorkels made from other vehicles to fit. Do a search on the site.

If you want a cold air intake, Ford actually built one and installed it in your vehicle.

lol.... True that air is fed from the grill on a stock airbox, however there is a baffle in this hole that prevents air from forcing it's way into the hose that leads to the side of the box.
You could take off you grill & then break this baffle apart to get rid of it & then run dryer hose/pvc to the airbox. I did something similar on a B2 I had.

Thanks, I'm sure Ford did a good job in 1991. But its 2013, there should be better options

Why should there be better options now? The technology of putting a tube in something hasn't really advanced much since then. Besides, until your engine can actually suck in more air than it can stock, you aren't gaining anything by putting a different pipe in the engine compartment.

From your air box, there is a tube that goes down near your exhaust manifold, where it has a t-junction to facilitate switching between allowing in warm air ducted over your manifold, or from only the other tube that goes out the front of your car next to your radiator. It has this switch to allow warmer air to come in to improve emissions and fuel economy. You can unhook and plug the vacuum lines leading into the top of your airbox into the thermostatic diaphragm to force cooler intake air.

I should note, you may not pass emissions if you modify that.
