Has anyone ever changed the mounting brackets for their nerf bars?

I like the matching grey nerf bars my explorer came with, but they had some rust and I didn't like how they bolted to the body and not the frame.

Has anyone ever made or used mounting brackets from something else to mount these to the frame?

Also, does anyone know how to take off the plastic pad on the nerf bar?

The pads comes off with a flat screwdriver or something to that effect. Get under it & pry up, the connectors will pop off.

If you want to bolt to the frame, might as well make or buy Rock Sliders.

I can't really fabricate something like that, and I'm not going off roading, so they'd mostly be useless. I could buy aftermarket ones that bolt to the frame, but I just wanted to try to use the stock ones.
