has anyone every just taken the muffler off a 4.0 SOHC?

OK, so why are you asking then? Just looking for affirmation?

I disagree on the performance and sound front (from experience and from touching base with others who have done it). At least with the 5.0. The SOHC V6 is a moody beyatch with custom exhaust. Results may vary.

FWIW, there are probably 100 different exhaust threads in the archives. You'll plenty of info there via one or both of the forum's search tools.

what do you mean its a moody "beyatch"?

a lot of people on here have said they had increased performance. and FYI i did use the search tool and didnt find what i was looking for. its a lot easier this way to find solutions to your EXACT situation. who cares if there's one more thread on this site?

Ok here are pics of the Y pipe. You get the general idea

Into muffler. if you do this, I found a offset in, center out works perfect

And here is before I built the Y pipe. This is the stock pipes with a magnaflow Y pipe installed to run a single in/out 2.5" muffler.

It's moody because it's a high pitched motor. The OHV is a deeper lower sounding motor whereas the SOHC tends to be higher pitched. This is a reason I went offroad Y- sound.

When putting exhaust on the SOHC, it's important to remember to stick to single out pipe no larger than 2.5". According to flowmaster, a single 2.5" pipe to the rear is ideal. I can attest to this as I had true 2.25" duals and the low end suffered.

you rock man haha. that is sweet. i see what you are saying now. you ran from the magnaflow "y" all the way to the manifolds? i think i'll just cut the cats out and weld pipe on from there. i dont want to mess with the O2 sensors. i would screw that up. thanks a lot for all the pics. i think i know what im gonna do now.

so go with the 2.25" in to the 2.5" out "Y" then go to the flowmaster 40 with 2.5" then go out the back with 2.5"? i would also like to throw it out the side behind the right rear tire instead of out the back under the muffler. is this a good idea or sould i leave it as is

I actually got the idea from a member on here by the name of Jakee.

I was actually going to do this but due to the weird bends and such, I said screw it and made a whole new Y pipe. So yes, it's the pipe from the manifolds down into a Magnaflow Y then a single pipe out the rear. Only other alternative is to gut the cats.

If you do this, prepare for a CEL. You either need to tune it to get rid of this or use a CEL Eliminator. American Muscle.com sells these or http://o2simulator.com/. Only do this for off road use only ;)

Parts to make the Y pipe are as follows

I used this kit. If you want 2.25", get that kit.

Magnaflow Y pipe

2 of these o2 bungs (sold in pairs)

Or if you're scurrrred to weld bungs in pipe
4x

2.5" Cat if you want to keep it legal. High flow and cheap. This is what I run when I'm feelin nice

I use these clamps for easy switch outs of cats or mufflers. Impact gun and some bolts woo hoo fun

Oh, and 2" to 2.5" adapter for connecting to manifold
... ok these aren't easy to come by. I had to ask performance curve to specially make 2 for me.

If you want to keep the stock Y pipe but adapt it to run a single in/single out 2.5" muffler then buy this Y pipe

http://performance-curve.com/10758-25dual225.aspx

If I remember correctly, when I did this I was using a 2.5" OFFSET INLET with a 2.5" CENTER OUTLET. Honestly, I had it dumped and the interior drone was so loud I couldnt stand it. This is why I got a 2.5" mandrel bent tail pipe created. Dual stainless steel tip. I dont have a pic, but the following video shows it

This is when I swapped the Super 40 to a Hooker Maxflo muffler. Quieter
but straight thru design .

mine is the '98 XLT. There is no "y" on it right now. it comes off the manifolds and goes into a dual 2.25" in single 2.25" out stock muffler. i think i'll get the magnaflow "y" and cut the stock pipes before the muffler, add the "y", then take it 2.5" to the muffler then 2.5" out and wrap it out behind the tire.

Bingo you got it. Just follow the following picture and you're golden

Notice the two brakets that had to be cut and rewelded. That is because for the pipes to fit into the magnaflow Y, the pipes had to be squeezed ever so slightly closer to eachother.

aright cool. thanks for all the replys and help. it should be sweet.

keep us updated!

For the record, I never said custom exhaust won't help with performance of the truck. Au contraire. I had a SOHC Sport and a new exhaust did help with performance that I enjoyed once I got one that sounded good (ditched a Magnaflow for a Flowmaster).

I said removing the cats shouldn't make a discernable change to the sound or increase performance, which was what you were asking when I replied.
