Has anyone taken the Explorer/Moutineer V8 and bored it and put a 347 stroker kit in it ???

I have a 98 Ranger 4x4 and wheel it very hard. I have 33's on it with the small 3.0L V6.

I live in Calif so the Explorer motor is a good choice for smog reasons.

Any info will be appreciated ! :D

I also am planning to change out the Tranny, Keep the stock transfer case. 9" Rear end w/ Detroit, Dana 44 w/ ARB up front.
I have ent decided on the suspension. I am either going to do a 3/4 eliptical ( goofy leaf ) setup, or go with coilover shocks. either way I will have very little lifft and tons of droop and flex.

What does everyone think ???

347

I have done it and all you need is alot of time and money!

I have heard that the 331 and 347 are not engine for street / trail use, but all to their own.

Why not regear your rig and / or add a 5.0L; more reliability with the same amount of work.

How about an NV4500 or an AOD auto, I wish I had used an overdrive transmission with my 5.0 swap.

Good luck on your choice.

I don't see why the longer-stroke versions of the 5.0 would be a poor choice for a Ranger or Explorer. The Mustang fanatics that post over at the Windsor Forum at www.corral.net may cam their 347s a bit hotter and need more frequent rebuilds because of the wear and tear of racing, but a milder 5.0 stroker should work really well in a Ranger. The cams designed for the 351W match the displacement almost perfectly. Ask for details about the Windsor stroker motors on the Corral website or on the Fordnatics e-mail list.

The biggest problem with a 347 is the fact that the piston pin gets moved into the oil ring. This is were a lot of the wear and rebuilds come from because of increase in oil consumption. There is a kit from Coast High Performance that keeps the pin below the oil ring. The kit is called a Street Fighter and its their lower priced kit. I had one in my 89 Mustang and was really happy with it. The only draw back to this kit is the pistons are expensive to replace if you ever want to do that. The kit uses standard 302 rod and main bearings so its great for repairs because you can get them from the local parts store. If you are starting from scratch a stroker doesn't cost much more than a 302. If max power is your goal make sure you get a very good head. Don't put stock heads on a stroker because you waste the benifets of the extra CID because you won't be able to fill them. Over all a 347 would be an ideal choice for a truck. I know Coast sells an emission legal version of a 347 but I don't know if its legal for a truck or only a mustang.

well instead of going to the trouble of getting them bored why dont you just put a 351 in it. or buy new heads for the 5.0
gt-40 heads and intake on that 5.0 would be nice

well it all depends on the power levels that want to be made. If mild is your thing (300 hp or less) then a 302 isn't to bad. If you want more power but don't want to twist the snot out of it to get it then a 347 is the way to go. As far as a 351w goes I would say the 347 maks more sence do to the physicly smaller size of a 302 vs. a 351w. As I said before if you are gonna by good rods and pistions anyway then a 347 isn't that much more than a 302, but compared to a junk yard specail it is expensive.
