ok this is something i need to make before my next wheeling trip. i need to know if any one has made a snorkel. i had a small misshap this weekend i was up at the little nachies and we came across this big mudhole my girlfriend say oh we can make that and thats were it went sour i got a good run at it about 35mph and we were lookin good and the ruck sinks into some big ruts i didnt see at the bottom. well luckly we were going so fast we made it out but my truck started sputering bad then it dies so i pulled over and poped tyhe hood and knew right away my air filter was soaked. so i pulled it out and drove it back to camp. but that was a 2 hour problem. so i was just wondering if any one had any good tips or ways to make a snorkel. thanks kevin

Do a search, there are a couple of threads on this.

hey man... your lucky! i went through one like that and my k&n filter sucked up so much water i hydrolocked... rebuilt the whole thing. theres a few on here thats made a snorkel... someone like greenmonster or something like that made his own.. its badass! so is his truck... good luck

Can I join the hydrolocked club. I dont know if I hydrolocked or just broke, in the mud bog. I need a snorkel. I am going to make one out of HDPE pipe.

In my opinion, the snorkel that DasFrem made is the best looking one. His looks more like something you would buy from ARB, etc. Many other PVC ones that I've seen look bad b/c of the angle, etc that the snorkel has towards the windsheild.

Also, search on Pirate4x4. My friend sent me the link last night of an Econoline 4x4 van w/ a v10. The guy built a snorkel out of 3 or 3.5" exhaust piping. Turned out pretty nice in the end. :) My plan in the future(hopefully the near future) is to build one that is identical to DasFrem's except for the 1st gen. Hopefully it'll turn out nice.

i found a good one on some jeep web site i am going to use i dont rearly care how it looks i just need to have it be a functional. i am not big into looks just wether it woorks or not. i am going to have to think of a way to keep it from filling up with water it rains alot in washington but that makes for alot of good mudding :D :D .

bmxking - yeah his snorkel does look real good. i also need to make one up! it doesnt seem to be real hard

if you dotn care about looks, do as zensius did... his is ghetto fabbed but functional, and removeable too :)

heck i got to figure out how to get one in my truck with fiberglass fenders

It is probably easier with fiberglass fenders, if you have plans of hiding it behind the fenders and then just coming up by the windsheild. sk1er17(?) did this on his and it looks awesome.

does this help

?

well first set a budget and then toss it out.. no kidding.. um look like he used pvc conduit for electric work. you can get it at home depot. first this is what you have to do tho... call around and get the snorkel head. after that its all cake.

I just got back from a 4x4 shop and plan on going back in a week or two to have them order the snorkel top. :D

Yup

Actually thats almost exactly how i did it.I ordered the scoop paid like 60 bucks. It took 3 months to get so i had plenty of time to sit and come up with a plan..It is electrical conduit. I had a kkm intake but couldnt find a housing big enough for the cone to go into. So i took it off and went back to the stock box and sealed it off. And drilled a 3 inch hole in the side of the box and used this threaded plumbing piece that fit right in and had a nut on the back. It goes right under the fuse box threw the inner support of the fender (which has this support box that i totally cut out. 7 hours ) and and up out of the fender. The seal on the fender that goes around the snorkel is just plain old vacumm tube split down the middle. The hardest part was the hole in the fender i started small and just kept test fitting after every cut till i got it right.. hope this helps... The total on the whole project was like 90 bucks give or take 10 bucks.. Ive had the snorkel on for 2 years now.ive had no problems and have been in water as deep as the bottom of the windshield.( dont recommend on doing it nor will i ever do it again). carpet tranny, axles and cab of truck all full of water hahah.

splodo49 - your snorkel looks good man. id like to do that to mine sometime soon! do you notice any power difference or a sound difference like a k&n cone filter would give you? just wondering!

snorkel

I did notice a power diff. from the kkm back to stock. Lost the little kick that the kkm gives from the get go. But with the snorkel I noticed a power diff. at about 30-40 mph when the snorkel acts as a ram air .But that’s about it.

If you put your ear up to the snorkel head you can hear it sucking. When I first put it on, I was afraid that the snorkel head wasn’t going to throw all the water out threw the little channels on the head when it rains. But being in florida at the time I drove threw one of the worst rain storms I’ve ever seen in my life. And pulled it into the garage to check the box and see if the filter was wet or any water in the box.. Their wasn’t any so the head works really good at channeling the water out..
When you first get your snrokel head have a buddy drive you down the road and just hold the snorkel head out the window and feel all the air the head forces threw it, youll be suprised at the amount and force. Good luck to who ever is going to do this. And i take no responsibility for your modifications. :D O yeah be prepared to hear alot of " Whats the thing poking out your hood? is that a periscope?" I hear that every where i go.
