I am considering putting a K&N drop in air filter into my 1995 explorer sport, and I was wondering if anyone here has one and if you could please tell me if it has helped your acceleration or MPG? Thanks for any input you guys have!

I'd like to start off by welcoming you to the site. As for your question....the filters are not a huge gain in anything. They do give you about an extra 10hp and about and extra 1mpg. The best thing is that you do get a improvement and you'll save money by not replacing the filters. My suggestion....go for it.

If I were you, I'd go ahead and get a K&N Filtercharger kit or the KKM Induction kit. These come with filters that are 150% larger than stock and replace the factory airbox. With either of these, you will close to double the gains of a drop-in. I got a better throttle response, about 1-2 mpg and an estimated 10 hp. I think Leebo's numbers are a little optamistic for just the drop-in. No offense meant, Leebo.

Whatever you do, good luck and enjoy!

you might be right......but now you must die.

After you said that I also remember wrapping my air tubes with heat tape and doing the headers too. But NEVER question me again, or else.

lol :)

K&N Drop in

Slick,

I have been using a k&N drop in for about 6 years now. It has more than paid for itself in just not buying new paper filters. Where I wheel is very dusty (So CA) so I'd have to but a new paper filter after each trip, once or twice a month!

I did notice (undocumented by dyno testing. just seat of the pants) a slight power improvement. mileage was uneffected, it seems. The most noticeable improvement came when I drilled about 5 2" dia holes in the sides of air box below (intake side of) the filter. I had to hide the holes on the rear and fender sides of the box on my '93, so as to not flunk the CA smog test visual inspection....everything has to look "factory stock" regardless of how clean it tests. If not, it fails!

If you live in a smog check state that has the visual requirement, you also may not want to go the "filter charger", or cone filter route, or else be prepered to put everything back stock before the inspection, and pray you don't get caught in a spot check. Fortunately, the K&N drop in is CARB (Ca Air Resources Bureau) certified, so its OK. Some other state's regulations reference the CARB approval, so, its important in those states too.

I have noticed a little HP gain but as for the MPG I reallly dont see any except when I am on the Highway.

WELCOME TO THE SITE!!

I do have a bit of driving on the highway and I have noticed an improvement in mpg. I don't know about hp's because with the larger tires and same gears, I can't tell for sure. The main reason I got it was for its reusable aspect, though a small mpg gain is good also. I think it will pay for itself more in being reusable than any other.

If I replace the filter with K&N filter kit on my 98 explorer, will it void any Ford warranty?

thanks!

take a look at this link.....I'm not sure if there's a difference in the airboxes between the '97 and the '00. I don't think there is but I could be wrong.
