If I push the 4hi button, I hear the relays but vehicle stays in 2 wheel drive (after moving the truck). I stop and put it in neutral push the 4 low button drive the vehicle it goes to 4 low. I stop take it out of 4 low then it stays in 4hi. I have already cleaned out the auto hubs. I was wondering if the problem is with the shift motor (broken stop thing). Any ideas. I couldnt find any posts with this particular problem, I got the impression that if the stop breaks inside the shift motor then the motor does not do anything at all. It is a 93 Explorer.

Alright, let me ask a few questions before I answer yours. :)

Can you shift into or out of 4H while moving or only when stopped?

If you attempt to shift into 4H while moving, do you hear a bunch of grinding noises?

In order to shift into 4L, do you first have to shift into 4H while stopped or can you go directly to 4L?

weird..

On a normally working system the shift module will not let the shift motor move into 4L unless its already in 4H.

I wont be able to answer your questions until tomorrow, the truck is in my shop, changing plugs. I pulled the shift motor off. The rubber stop was cracked in half, a little flat on one side but really in not to bad of shape. I slipped a piece of hose over top of it, cleaned up the contacts and put it back on. I will check it out tomorrow after work.
