I know this is posted under something else. but no responses.
Here it is, i know a jeep guy and he told me if i wanted more airflow instead of chopping my air box to pieces, just to take it out all together and just use a bicycle clamp and some panty hose and something else to strain the air.
Would this not be damaging to the engine. i might try it and see what the power difference is. but befor i do that i want some suggestions.
thanks.

that sounds like a jeeper solution, LOL. You'd gain about 1/2 hp and you'd risk doing lots of damage to your engine. Not only that, but a pantyhose fair filter really would block very few dust particles, would rip and tear easily (especially if being held on with a bicycle clamp)

DO NOT DO THAT!!!!!!!

do not do that i did that to my old beater car becuse i didnt care but i found that the panty hose rips way to easily and i found "gunk" like twigs and leaves when i drained my oil.

This is the exact thing i posted on the other thread. as in i just cut and pasted. please dont do that it is annoying

bad, bad, bad idea. please don't do it!!

Bad idea. An air filter is able to pass alot of air and still filter small particles because of the amount of surface area on the filter. That is why it is pleated. That is why more expensive performance filters have much more and finer pleating = area. They do not increase the size of the "holes" they just give you more of them. Look at it this way, you can see through the 'hose, you cant see through your filter- tells you something. I run my SB350 with filter cover upside down to open the top of the filter box, but I ensure the filter seal is tight on both ends. I question the whole idea of holes anyhow. The parts in play here are tube to intake, filter, filter box inlet. Is it really believable that resistance to air getting into the box through the factory holes is nearly equal or greater than resistance to air getting through the filter and down the intake tube? Isn't the bore of the intake tube less area than the combined size of the box inlet holes?

That in itself should tell you it is a bad idea. ;)
