The head gaskets needs replace on the wife's 05 explorer...#4 is misfiring, loosing coolant, heater won't work, ect...

At first I'm thinking, oh that's no big deal...but then I start looking into it and it has 3 timing chains (WTF?) and the right side is behind the motor (DWTF???)

And now I'm not so sure I can mess with this thing. Lol

I just want to replace the head gaskets and other seals along the way...

I can't find a good wright up on how to do this...anyone know of one or tell me cinda how to go about it...

I need this done by Sunday night so I'm cinda pressed for time...

Am I going to need special tools and crap like that?

Any help is hugely appreciated....

I have only messed with V8's so the 3 timing chains has me baffled..

...start pulling the motor. there is a special tool to hold the cams in place during assembly (if I remember correctly). back in '00 I pulled one to replace timing chain guides, got it all back together and in the vehicle and the thing still was rattling like nobodys buisness. Ford ended up buying that one back under warranty, it had other issues too we couldn't resolve. Lemon law for that one.

camshafts will have to be retimed

Removing the heads on the SOHC V6 can be done with the engine in the vehicle but the camshafts will have to be retimed that usually requires the OTC 6488 timing tool kit. It's unlikely that you can rent one. A used one can frequently be purchased on ebay for $150. Even with the tool kit the process is a little complicated if never been done before. It's not something I recommend if you're pressed for time because careful attention to detail is important. Many have broken components because of left hand bolts or lever arms changing the torque specification. Having two people simplifies positioning the chain when the head is removed and installed.

Are you certain the head gasket is leaking? Have you checked the spark plugs for signs of coolant? Is there a coolant smell in the exhaust? Is the compression low? You may just have a fouled spark plug and a leak in the heater core.

If you PM me your email address I will send you the SOHC V6 assembly instructions that shows how to use the tools and how to assemble the engine. You can look at my helpful threads for information on timing the camshafts. I think you should confirm the head gasket is blown before removing the head and you should have the tool kit and understand how to use it. Even then I would plan for several days to accomplish the job correctly.

Pretty sure it's it.
I just replaced the plugs a few months ago..
I pulled #4 plug last night and it was dirty and very wet and smelled like coolant...

Exhaust definitely has a odd smell to it...
And I need to add coolant once a week and I can't find any leaks..

I'll shoot you my email...not 100% I'll tackle the job but at least I can study up on it..
