Head light problem

When I turned on the head lights it's always out I have to flick the high beam lever to have it on. Sometimes I have to do it several times to make it works. Anybody who can help me find the problem?

Possibly a switch problem.

I have the headlight schematic for 97....

Power is supplied from power distribution box to headlight switch then to dimmer switch then to interior fuse panel then to lamp out warning module (if you have that) then finally to headlights. It seems most likely that the dimmer switch is failing. The dimmer switch is part of the multi - function switch (turn signal switch, wipers, ect.)

You can test without removing switch if you can find the connector at the base of the steering column (C226) This connector has 14 pins arranged in two rows 1-8 and 9 - 14. There are two tests for the dimmer circuit. Both are looking for continuity either with self powered test lamp or ohmmeter.

First test: Connect to CKT 196 (DB/O) and CKT 632 (GY/O). These are pins 7 and 9 in connector 226. Pull up switch and release. You should see closed circuit only when switch is in HI position.

Second test: Connect to CKT 15 (R/Y) and CKT 13 (R/BK). These are pins 2 and 3 in connector 226. Pull up switch and release. You should see closed circuit only when switch is in LO position.

If it isn't the switch, look for loose connections in column and possibly at interior fuse panel on left end of dash.

When you get done testing everything, I'm betting that it is your multi-function switch (wiper, high-beam combo switch).

My multi function switch was replaced today. The switch cost $129.80 + labor. It works now. Thanks.
