OK, folks. I am exploring the option of buying some headers for my 96 5.0 Limited to replace a cracked OEM passenger (notorius for 5.0L) factory header. So I need advice from someone who is using them on their 5.0 Explorer. Primarily, I want to facilitate or increase low end torque from my engine, rather than blazing speed or horsepower increases. When it comes to towing/pullng, usable torque, not HP, rules. So I would like to get some tuned or engineered for torque. Done searches on our forum and looking at Ford motorsport headers, either stainless or ceramic as the comments I read say they fit well. Which is the best and most practical? Are headers practical to begin with and do they hold up well without loosening up, burning out or require additional maintenance? Never owned headers so what are the pros and cons used on a daily driver and tow vehicle? Looking forward to your input and comments! Mike

I put the FMS stainless ones on last week. So far they're awesome! I just towed my '65 Ford PU with my X last night and I could tell a big difference. Much better.

Section525: Thanks for the input. Could you tell any difference in torque between 1800-2600 RPM? Presume you tow out of overdrive? At 60 MPH towing with my 3.73LS axle, I am turning 2900RPM. Top torque range curve on our 5.0L engines is 3200 RPM. How was the fit & where did you get them? Could you tell a difference in noise level inside? Thanks Mike

I can really tell a difference from about 2200 rpms and up. There is a lot more get up and go when getting on the freeway and such. The sound actually seemed to mellow out a little on mine. Mine had a pretty bad leak in the exhaust manifold... and that combined with my MagnaFlow exhaust made for a pretty loud ride.

The install was pretty easy. I did it myself in a few hours. The only thing you need to watch out for is FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS EXACTLY (like I should have done).. and try to get the connector pipes (that pipe the headers bolt on to) out of your way so you can line the headers up perfectly. They tend to want to push your headers forwards and up. And it makes it a pain to bolt them down smoothly.

I got mine from FordPartsNetwork.com.

Mine were something like $184 to my door.

Good Luck
