Early 02 Explorer XLS
Hi....just bought an 02 Explorer XLS. I have a few questions....Did all 02 X's come with DRL's?? My headlights only come on when I turn the knob. My X has no brights?? When I push lever forward, nothing happens...no high indicator on dash. Are the smaller headlamps in the headlight housing the high beams....because those don't work at all. The larger area that holds the bulb with a metal cover over the end are the ones that work....these are the low beams?? Thanks for any info!!:D

Low beams are on the outside, furthest from the center of the vehicle. High beams are the smaller ones, closest to center.

i would check your fuses.. if they are all good could be your relay... if thats not bad you prob have a wire problem.. but it sounds like a fuse or a relay problem to me.. could be wrong tho.. its at least a good place to start and eliminate some possible sources of the problem

Thanks for the info! I'm not even sure where the fuse box is located yet?? I will check ss soon as I get time....weather permitting...lol. It's been like 6 degrees the last few days.

The main fuse box is under the hood behind the battery and the other one is up under the dash, above the drivers foot well area.

Below is a drawing from the Haynes manual. I assumed here that you do not have the daytime driving lights and are an early build date. Hope it is good enough to read. Printing it should improve it. If you vehicle has daytime driving lights it will have a small module between the fuse box and the firewall fastened to the outside sheet metal with a wiring harness attached to it. If there is just a wiring harness plug in this area that is not going to anything you do not have the daytime driving lights. From what I can see from the drawing , #39 fuse feeds the high beam lights as well as the dash indicator. You can see on the drawing that there is a relay as well as fuse # 19 in this circuit. This fuse actually feeds fuse #39 when high beams are on. At the top center of the drawing you can see yet another fuse #22 that supplies the power to the relay. If all these are o/k there could be a problem with the selector switch on the column or the relay itself or a wiring issue. Both the high and low should use the same ground but if not that could be an issue also. Hope this helps!

so this is what i found, the pivots for the stalk switch, the one you push and pull for high beams, has a pivot that wears, increasing the gap to linkage for the internal contacts, so it wont move the contacts,i just pushed the stalk in and pilot drill a hole at each end of where the pivots were, install 2 small screws,re-install switch and your good to go

Good fix. How many hours did it take to trace the circuits to find where the problem was ? Not a place that you would even think about.
