MFS (multi-function switch) on steering column most likely bad. Search for MFS and read away!!

I actually just kinda had the same problem. I also think its the MFS, its fairly simple to remove and clean (to some, it may be hard to put back together), you can just replace it, but it it costs like $40. at Rockauto.com, more at local part stores, ten times more at the dealer. This is what should be the problem, http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=1482154 . Overtime, it the connections inside can get dirty, so it would/can make the headlights not work, or the wipers turn on when you turn your blinkers on. Its just like 2 screws/bolts to the column, and like 1-2 connecters, and its out (you will have to take some dash trim off though). Then take it apart, wipe all the connections down, then spray some CRC electrical cleaner on it, then put it back together.

Hope this helps.

snowboi. the later part of your post, is that to clean it and put same back in? thnkx

Yes, cleaning it is very easy, a cloth (maybe some ear cleaners would help too), and some of the electrical parts cleaner I said in the post, you will have to take it off of the column to clean it, then theres a few screws that actually hold the MFS together, take it apart, notice how it comes apart, then clean it, let it sit for maybe 1-2 minutes, then put it back together. If you dont feel like cleaning it (and saving $40.+) then you could just buy a new one.

headlights - off

Having a similar issue. Used to have to pull the MFS stick towards me to get high beams to come on. Then while driving in a snowstorm lights just failed altogether, did not get high beams anymore, low beams would only come on by holding the same stick in (ie. light flash).

I had the steering column all apart last weekend, took the MFS switch out and tested the continuity of the circuitry according to the Haynes manual. Unfortunately I had not read this post and did not actually take the MFS apart to clean the inside as I believed the continuity testing with voltmeter would be sufficient (nor did i have the appropriate torx bit to do so).

I have checked and pulled everyone of my fuses they are all good. This is a 92 explorer, eddie bauer edition. It does have day time running lights normally, however they do not come on at this time.

What I'm wondering is does this sound like the MFS switch? Is there something else I should be checking in my troubleshooting (ie. a specific relay, module, or fuseable link, etc?). How does the daytime running module come into play here, where is it located? If there is something else I should be checking I would like to do it before renting a steering wheel puller again.

Thanks for the help!! :)
