Heating problem.

Hey evryone.

I've got a couple of questions.

1. My coolant temp never goes over 1\8th past cold. My heating works, but isnt Hot. Its warm.

2. My windshield washer jets dont always work. Sometimes, i need to push it in soo hard to make them spray.

3. I get about 370 - 420 km on full tank. Thats about 73 litres. Is their a problem?

4. My pasenger front wheel or suspension squeeks going over bumbs. Is that my ball joint?

1. It sounds like the thermostat is stuck in the open position. I would flush the cooling system and change the thermostat.

2. Not really sure about this one. But since pushing hard on the button gets the washer to spray it seems like the button is the problem. I'd suggest replacing the multifunction switch.

3. That doesn't seem too bad. Unless you do a lot of highway driving, then it may be a little low.

4. It could be your ball joint, but it could also be your sway bar bushings causing the squeak. Jack the truck up and grab the tire at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock. Try and rock the tire, if you feel any play than your ball joints are worn.

The multifunction switch is the whole assembly that controls the wipers, turn signals, brights, and windshield washer. Here is a thread where someone replaced theirs on a second gen. Replacing it on a first gen should be very similar. In that thread the switch cost them $66 dollars from the dealer. But the dealer may not carry it for a '91 so you may be better off just grabbing one from a junkyard.

You shouldn't delay in replacing the Tstat. If it gets stuck in the closed positon it could cost you an engine.

sorry guys, now i have a second gen. I should change my information. But i still have my 91 eddi. Can i use the multi switch from a 1st gen on a 2nd gen? Thanks.

No. The multifunction switches not only changed between generations but also during generations. For instance a '95 multifunction switch will not work in a '99 even though they are the same generation. So if getting the part from a junkyard try and get one from a truck that is the same year as yours.

Edit: I did a little research and came up with a little more exact information. Apparently Ford changed the wiring to the switch in '98 or '99 which is why earlier switches will not fit. What year is your second gen? If it is a '97 or older then a switch from a '95-'97 model should work. And if it's a '99 or newer then a '99-'01 switch should work. I don't know about a '98 because I'm not sure if the wiring was changed in '98 or '99.

ok , i went to go get a thermostat. The guy at napa asked if my car is ohv or sohc. He says that the thermostats are different. The one for the ohv is 10$ and the one for the sohc is 45$. How can i find out what version 4.0l i have?

You're right about this but he has a second gen in addition to the '91. See post #6 and 8.

Georgie, look at the 8th digit of the VIN. If it's an E then you have the SOHC and if it's an X then you have the OHV. Or you could pop the hood and if it's a SOHC it should clearly say that on a piece of plastic trim over the upper intake.
