All -
My wife has a couple of friends at work with Explorers, and it looks like I'll be asking more questions as time goes on (she pimps me out for side work, and the extra money comes in handy...)

I'm about to work on a 1998 Explorer, V8-302, A/T (5R55E, I think,) 4WD, Eddie Bauer edition (don't know if that last bit will matter for this, but here it is...) and my question is this:

Where the Zodd did they hide those oxygen sensors?!?

Per Mitchell, there are four (which I expected.) I have been able to see two of them, but I haven't seen the other two yet.

Please help! She'll be coming around Saturday (02JUL2010) so I can replace them - since she's getting a CEL/MIL again, and they're probably just starting to fail. I've no trouble sourcing replacement parts, but I can't find the wretched things to pull them out in the first place!

If you can provide pictures with enough area covered to help me locate them, that would be somewhere beyond excellent! I'd have to make a note to be nice to you someday for that...

Oh - and if you've run across me on a Jeep board - yep, same 5-90. Hi!

You have to remove the center console & then cut the carpet which gains you access to a removable panel. Remove the four screws and pull out the access panel. You will see three of the four O2 sensors.

Heres the howto for removing the console http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=209770

The transmission is the 4r70w.

What? This is nuts! And people wonder why I'm an AMC/Jeep guy...

At least you're saying it's a short job to pull out. Still, this is just a bit whacked - having to pull interior to get to engine parts strikes me as silly.

Thanks!

At least you don't have to drop the Exhaust to access them like on my '97 Cougar and Ford was smart enough to put the access panel in. I guarantee
the Chrysler HEEPS weren't engineered so smart. :p::D

Yah, I know. My Jeeps aren't Chrysler - they're AMC!

It was a sad day indeed when Jeep's became Chrysler products.
