I am new to this place getting ready to fix up my 2001 explorer sport 4x4. I am havinf problems with my 4x4 low. For some reason it will not work. I am a avid offroader but I have not been able to do anything with my truck because of my 4x4 low.

Any Ideas?:p:

Ok here is the problem. I want to do this myself for the fact that anytime I take it to a dealer or repair shop they chop my baby up like nothing else and tell me it this and that when it is not that complicated (the guys I live with tell me it is because I am a girl they do this LOL). I need to know the best way to do this and what tools do I need.

I bought this used and it worked fine when I test drove it (the sales rep was suprised I actually took it offroading when test driving it) so everything work just fine. Until I took it up north for the first off road trip (since I bought it) and then it did not work so I was baffled. I just want to do this myself so I do not have to pay up the @$$ for the repair work.

A little background will help alot for us to point you in the right direction. What is the truck doing (or not)?

how are you putting it into 4x4 low? are you just pushing the button? are you making sure you put it into neutral first then hitting the low button, then putting it into gear? Let me know. I apologize if this sounds basic, but it will help me ensure the problem.

Yes I was putting it in neutral first before switching it into 4x4 low. But guys thanks for the help.

This afternoon a friend of mine and I changed the fuel filter because banks 1 & 2 were running lean and the check engine light was on. We reset the computer. I took it for a test drive hoping that would take of the problem (so we did not have to change the o2 sensors front & back). I had read somewhere today after your advide that resetting the computer that it may be the problem. While I was out I wanted test out the 4x4 low see if it was in the computer and IT WORK!!! I am sooooo happy and gracious for all the help guys.

Thank you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the official TSB. There is a recall kit that has the upper intake gaskets and the chain tensioner setup, I believe. Once again- I am not a v6 drive train expert. Search around a little bit and you will find some more help. Or, you can start another thread in the under the hood forum about your problem, you won't get much help without a more descriptive tittle.
