Hello all, and thanks as you've already helped me immensely. I just took ownership of 96 Explorer V8 4WD that was sitting at my father-in-law's for over a year. We happened to see it when visiting his house this summer for our annual fly-fishing trip and asked what he intended to do with it. He was stuck - it wouldn't start and he didn't have a use for it so we offered to come back and drive it home.
After diagnosing the issues over the phone he was able to get the battery replaced and other issues taken care of at the dealer, so after confirming that it was road-worthy I set out from Denver to San Diego. The car ran well and trouble-free, even crossing the Mojave desert in mid afternoon on tires that I later discovered had around 14 PSI in them. The car has only 132K which sounds like a lot but this thing feels like 50K - very strong, stable, well-cared for, and feels like it's got another 100K to go.
I have to say that, never having owned a Ford, I am very impressed with the build quality and driveability of this thing. I drives remarkably well for a full-time 4WD vehicle, and the gas mileage is not bad. All in all a great vehicle that gives me (and my wife and 2 kids) a great deal of confidence when diving.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your knowledge as it's already helped me diagnose and fix a couple of issues. I feel smarter already.
