98 Explorer XLT
Im new to the group. Found this group when searching for info on my Explorer. Have a 98 XLT with 223,000 miles (org tranny and engine!) Just killed the transmission on Wensday so now Im looking to have some fun with it!

Thinking of putting a 302 with all wheel drive in?

Welcome to this forum! Rebuild the transmission, and write a step by step how to repair thread with pictures.

I was thinking the same thing after reading some of the stuff about doing a engine swap. My only scare is I have 223,000 miles on the engine. Im thinking of rebuilding the engine, and I can get a newer tranny for 665.00 that had 35,000 miles on it delivered to me!

Have a lot of ideas with it! I love my explorer just wish it got 30 mpg (since I ay live 40miles from work one way)

Maybe you could just rebuild both of them at the same time. You will know that everything is new instead of getting one used with mileage, and in unknown condition.

Only one problem with that! I've never worked on a Transmission before. I can rebuild the engine, no problem!
I did just have someone offer me a complete 302 and transmission 4x4 for 650.00! Wondering if its worth it?

It's worth it if you want to swap everything like wiring harnesses, PCM, driveshaft, mounts, exhaust, etc. Read the A4LD rebuild diary, and the 5R55E valve body rebuild diary. The A4LD is not an 5R55E, but it will give you a basic idea of what is involved. There were the C3, A4LD, 4R44E, 4R55E, 5R44E, and 5R55E then some newer ones like the 5R55W, 5R55N, and 5R55S in this series. Read the 5R55S swap sticky thread too.
