Welcome to Explorer Forum!

I had a '98 Sport myself at one time (then a '99 Sport).

Things I'd look for - mostly common things you should look for in a any used vehicle:
Tire condition
Milage
Condition of Chassis - Excessive Rust, parts hanging, etc.
Body - rust - even those rusty bubbles can become a problem
Transmission feel - clunks, jerks and the like
Engine - Knocks, misfire, overheat, etc
Any holes or leaks in the exhaust?

Explorer specific:
Rear shackles - These things are known to rot out very nasty sometimes
Rear springs - is the rear of the truck really low?

I know there will be more pointers by other members.

Do you happen to know which of the two 4.0L V6's are i it?

-Andy

thank you i dont know what engine i just drove by it looks in good condition. the owner of it is a friend of a guy i work with. oh an i know rust all to well i own a jeep

You should be fine I got a 98, while it's not a 6 cyl it's a $300 truck and it's like new. I like it better than my 07 Mercury.
