Hi i live in australia and my parnter and i are looking to buy a roughly 91-99 model explorer ( what ever we come across at the time) but this will be out price range age.

we have heard nothing but bad things about them and have been told by many not to buy them yet we see them driving all over the place so they cant be that bad.

Can anyone enlightn me on them, tell me some of their major faults and so on.

We have heard the major faults are Gear box and engine failures (diff things)

Love to hear from those who have had no troubels at all or those who did have troubles and what can be done and if after being fixed they were 100% fine cars to own .

We REALLY LOVE the look of them and are kenn ford owners and are dissapointed that they seem to be a car to steet clear of

thanks in advance

Carmen

Welcome Carmen,

There is not one single vehicle ever made that does not need maintenance in its life. All vehicles are machined with parts that eventually need replacing, or need some repair.

The owner of each vehicle plays a major role in how long things last, and hold up to the vigor's of use. So to say these are faulty vehicle to "steer clear" of is just a biased opinion. The Explorer is the most popular SUV on the market, that means parts are abundant at a fairly cheap price.

Your not going to get many posts slamming the Explorer here on this site. Just the opposite.

I own 2 Explorers, both with over 200,000 miles,(320,000km) and still run strong, and are reliable.

Thank you for your reply.

im not expecting anyone to give the bad word on the exploroer im just looking for people opinions and their experience dealing with this car...they have a bad name here in australia and unfortuantely within a week of us talking to a mechanic friend he had 2 come in that week one had a knocking sound the other a completelty seized engine.

im just looking to know peopels experiences good and bad on the car.

We are ford owners weve owned many in the past and look to purchase a 4 x 4 with expolorers being our top pic but just arent as keen to buy one with the bad rep they have here.

do the maintenance and it should be no problem,
i have a 96 with over 360,000 kilometers on it now, , it is rusting away as we get winter and road salt, but the running gear is fine,,

Welcome to this forum! Some areas need more attention than others such as the blend door, transmission, transfer case, etc. We have information on how to repair & maintain these vehicles, so don't worry about fixing it up. Some members have over 400K miles on their vehicles.
