2002 Ford Explorer
Hi guys,
I was looking up Ford Explorer reviews and came upon this forum so decided to drop in and say hi.
I am currently looking at a Ford Explorer 2002 which is in very very good condition considering it has done over 124k miles.
The guy selling it had the complete gearbox replaced about 4 months ago. He bought it from someone 3 years ago who had it imported from the states as a used car so we are not really sure of its history but I gave the car the complete overlook and all the nuts holding the bonnet, the doors and the rear boot have got the original factory paint still on them which I guess means that atleast they werent ever taken off i.e. the car hasnt had any major accidents. Now I need to ask you guys for your expert advice please.
1. Should I buy the car? My running on the car will be no more than 100 miles a week as I walk to work and the kids take the school bus. This SUV I am buying only to take the kids to the malls or the park once a week maybe. I am getting it for about 2300$ which to me sounds like pretty cheap and no its not stolen :D
2. If I do decide to go for it, what other things that I should be aware of that can go wrong in this model? I think its a 2WD model. I have read that this model had a lot of problems in the transmissions? I drove the car myself with and without the overdrive and it never gave any smoke even on high revs and we took it up to a 100 mph and there were absolutely no issues with the acceleration or wobbling or engine sounds etc. Honestly it felt like I was driving a brand new car you know.
3. If I can get the chassis number of the car, is there a website which I can use to get its service history in the states maybe?
4. I dont do used cars so this would be my first. But am not a car fixing type of guy nor do I have the time or the garage to do any work myself and going to the mechanics here is quite expensive but more a waste of important time you know.
5. I know I can get good japanese small used cars for the same price but I was thinking that the SUV has a lot of metal around it so my family would be safe in it god forbid if there is an accident. The speed of traffic is very fast here and we dont do small fender benders here unfortunately, every accident is big here.
so, thoughts? any help or advice would be appreciated ofcourse :)

Welcome to this forum! It sounds like it's in good condition so have a reputable mechanic check it for you before you purchase it.

thanks BrooklynBay, we have a government run car testing facility which runs a complete diagnostic test for a small fees, planning on taking it there this weekend.

Thanks Mike65 :)
