Hello everybody! I am new member from finland, europe. Don`t own any explorer or ranger but got the same german made 2,9 and A4LDe like some of you have. Have owned my car since 1983. This P5 taunus(mine is 1967 model) was the first car that cologne v6 was assembled (in the end of 1964, and I was born also)At the beginning it was only 2liters and 90 hp. Got now 2,9 12valve twin turbo 350hp/500Nm and A4LDe

Taunus weights only 1200kg, so it is fast enough. 0-100km/h goes under 6s. and it runs 240 km/h ( 6000 rpm with overdrive )
A4LD is on its limit. Third gear slips a bit.
I am going to build stronger box and 24valve cosworth BOB engine during this winter.
So I need now advice what parts do I need to change to box
(maybe more planet wheels or moore plates to clutches?)

Do you have the American version of the A4LD or the foreign version of the later model A4LDE? http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=239416. This is an odd ball A4LD from the UK called the A4LDE. It's different than the ordinary A4LD, but is not like the 4R55E. It's what you could call an in between version or a missing link which we never had in the US versions.

A4LD version

Don`t know what version my box is. It has been with EEC4, and fourth gear and turbine lock are solenoid used by EEC4, other gears are working normally way.Got also newer box from cosworth 24 valve engine where all the gears are used by EEC5. But I am not going to use EEC5 because I have megasquirt.
So I can`t use all electric box. Now I am wondering what parts are interchangeable and what parts are going to go broken with 500-600Nm torque. Or is the main problem that the box is made in france, and they can do only parfums? Heh..

Which Cosworth engine do you plan to use? The one with the single 3 meter duplex chain or the later one with the two simplex chains and variable induction system?

Are the BOB engines still available or will you use one from a donor vehicle?

I have both versions, BOA with one duplex chain(195hp) and BOB with two simplex chains(207hp). I am going to use BOB because it has moore lift on cams and better intake. Both engines are used and taken from scorpio cosworth. I have to do some service first: change piston rings ,bearings etc.

Cosworth on Explorer?

What is the possibility of using the Explorer 4.0 SOHC block with the Cosworth heads and intake manifold? Are there significant differences in the 2.9 and 4.0 liter blocks other than bore and stroke?

4,0 24v.

There are some diffrencies between 2,9 and 4,0 blocks. 4,0 block is little bit higher than 2,9 and oilpan pattern is diffirent. There are some other problems too, like in front of engine to get timing gear chains to fit. Not so simple.

I suspected that someone had already done it. Sounds like it would be easier to bore and stroke a BOB than to use a 4.0 block. As I recall the torque and horsepower peak at significantly higher engine speeds on the BOB than on the stock 4.0. The SOHC is already lacking in torque at lower engine speeds to move a 4,000 pound SUV. Thanks for the link! I'll read the writeup soon.
