I have just purchased a 2000 Explorer as a gift for a friend. It had developed a rattleing noise around the valve covers and when given throttle, parked, will die/not run. This was the reason for previous owner, selling.Possibly 'jumped time?

Jumped time means the timing chain slipped. If you have the SOHC 4.0 there is a good chance the chain guide broke. Unfortunately it's not a cheap fix.
