I have a 2002 xlt, and on 5 occasions it has just died without warning. We are always going between 45-70 miles per hour, and without warning just completely dies! The dash always remains lit, clock is on etc., but engine is dead, no acceleration, steering locks. Goes from 70 to 0 in seconds....It always starts right back up.

Ford has not been able to find a thing! No codes are ever in system. They even sent an engineer in from Ford who ran tons of tests, and they can't find a thing.

We are terrified to drive this car. PLEASE HELP!!!

Only thing I can think of is the alternator died but that doesn't make sense with the dash remaining lit and starting right back up. Maybe some kind of short?

Welcome to the site. Were you on the gas, or coasting when this happened? You may have a blockage in the fuel filter I suppose. What kind of MPG are you getting?

Maybe a bad coil (?) Alot of Toyota's have almost identical symptoms, and it's usually the coil.

We have usually been coasting when it has occured.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

If you are coasting when it happens there is a very good chance you need to change the Idle air control valve. My 96 did the same thing, and this fixed it. They are about 40-50 and can be replaced in a few minutes.

Well, we have the Expplorer back, and they couldn't find the problem either, They reprogramed the PCM (?). The previous dealership had changed the idle air control valve 2x before, so they didn't want to do it again.

I really appreciate everyone's advice and help. Right now the Explorer is just sitting on the driveway as we decide what to do next.

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. It dies all the time with no warning. The dealership is giving my the same lame excuse. --they can't duplicate the problem so they can't fix it. Its under warranty, so its free to take it in, but the problem is they don't do anything. I'm scared to even get in my truck and the dealership could care less. I contacted an attorney this morning.

What have you replaced already?
