'99 eddie bauer
Ok I have been searching, no scouring, the forums as well as the ENTIRE interwebs to try and find some information on my 99 eddie bauer sound system. I believe that I have the audiophile sound system and I was trying to research some aftermarket heads and speakers for the rear. But I am at a complete loss because I can not find any information outside of the 1 sentence in the quick reference about 4" speakers used in ford explorers. I know my explorer uses 4 inch speakers in the front because I just replaced them yesterday. When I pulled the door panels off there is a "speaker box" in the door that holds the speaker and tweeter in a sealed enclosure. This plugs in to a factory harness and the whole unit comes out as one piece. Inside is a 4 inch speaker and a .75ish inch tweeter hooked up to some type of amplifier / circuitry. Where can I find some information on upgrading these speakers as well as what I have for rear speakers? Am I a ret@rd for searching for 4" speakers or what? I am literally going crazy now trying to figure out what the heck is going on.

should be 6x8" in front and rear doors when you take full thing out and pioneer makes good ones =]

Hey explorerguy89, thanks for the quick response. I was going a bit out of my mind earlier; but nothing a good grilled cheese couldn't fix ;) I could see how the speaker box thing could be 6x8, but how is everyone doing these "direct swaps" of their speakers. The harness that plugs into the rear of the speaker box is quite abnormal. If the speakers go directly into this box do you have to lose the front grill or cover that seals the whole enclosure up? Also what about the electrical components that are contained in each enclosure, am I supposed to just get rid of them when I replace the speakers? If anyone knows a place where I can find some information on the exact speaker system I have I would greatly appreciate a link in the right direction.

Thanks

Do they look like these in this E Bay ad? If so they are basically a component speaker system with a physical separate tweeter and mid range speaker in a single housing. The electronic components you see are an "crossover" which separates the signal for the mid range speaker (4 inch) and the tweeter smaller speaker. I haven't replaced these type of speakers but you could upgrade to a separate mid range speaker and tweeter which is called an component setup. The tweeter should come with a separate or built in "crossover" to ensure the signal is (filtered) directed to the proper speaker. The speaker connection on each door should be just a single pair of wires that is somehow split into the electronic crossover. There are adapter plates available on E Bay to adapt or fill in the hole on the door panel for the speakers. A lot of people go to crutchfield.com which has a world of info for those "who do it yourself". Good luck.

yes they are still 6x8 speakers and as long as you check the plug in the back that it is only 2 wire going into the mount the whole thing can be removed and replaced as if it were any old speaker
