Driving at highway speed, exploder lurches, keeps going, in dash display turns red and no words are visible.

Trans only has one gear, neutral to drive shift sounds like the trans is gonna fall the hell out.

all dash lights and gauges are going retarded, and gauges now read zero.

once i turned it off, it will not start.

Input is appreciated, i felt the alternator, and the case was smoldering hot , so thats my guess, it took a crap on me.

Check battery connections, and the ground to the chasis. loose cable would do that too or bad battery.

This post confuses me. Is there something about an Explorer that I missed that would cause these symptoms because of a bad alternator?

On most modern cars any voltage fluctuations will cause havoc in different places. Remember, most of the sensors and computers monitor the voltage and react to it. You start messing up with volts right at the begining, then everything is confused.

When my alternator went on my Gen III X, it went all of a sudden. It was at night. The vehicle ran ok, but all the systems began shutting down one by one until all I was left with was dim head lights and a slow moving vehicle....no gauges, no interior lights, no nuthin'. I finally had to pull off the road when the battery was drained. The next day I replaced the alternator, and everything was hunky dorry. Oh yeah, I replaced the battery too....it was shot after 150k miles and being drained down to nothing.

+1 in everything that happened here.. when these Explorers kill the charging system, it's nothing like I've ever seen.

Ditto with my Gen 4 except at 80,000 miles last Summer.
