You have an A4LD.

As Paul said, the 91-94 explorers were blessed with the same wonderful transmission that is put into 4 cylinder mustangs of the same years. The everlasting A$LD.
I am on my third already with only 96000 miles. Excellent engineering job.
I may be wrong, but I am not even sure that the E4OD was around in 91.
Take care and happy exploring!

Here is some good info I have found about Ford's Autos.

While the basic housing and internals are the same on all A4LD's, the 4.0 version is significantly beefed up over all the others. The 90.5-9 early 93's were all the same. In 93.5, there were significant internal upgrades which pretty much eliminated the problems with the early 4.0 A4LD's (these included replacing most of the thrust washers with torrington bearings and other mods). The 93.5 also had the computer controlled overdrive and converter lock-up. All A4LD's can be built up to the level of the 93.5+ very easily. It just requires someone who actually knows what they are doing.

It is quite obvious Todd, that the people who have rebuilt your tranny don't have a clue what they are doing. Don't feel bad, this is not uncommon in the auto trans industry...... just as in the auto repair industry. Even if you get the trans at a Ford dealer, you are not getting a Ford rebuilt tranny...... they just get one from one of the mass produced rebuilding outfits. The A4LD is like any overdrive tranny, they are not easy to work on..... and the person doing it REALLY needs to know what they are doing...... and care. They also need to know what parts HAVE to be replaced at every rebuild.

Unfortunately, many shops only replace the obvious (soft parts: clutches, bands, servos). This way, the trans will go bad again soon, and maybe you will be back again. Then they can blame the problem on the crappy design of the tranny. This is the way many in the auto repair industry give themselves guaranteed future work.

Sad, but true.

You hit it right on the head Gloria.

My first rebuild was done by a shop that seemed to know what it was doing. Well 2200km(yes only 2200km) later it failed. I ended up taking it somewhere else where they did a good quality rebuild and did all of the upgrades plus a few more heavy duty upgrades that I specified. It is worth it to shop around. The best thing it to talk to racers and see where they get their transmission done. In the long run, it costs more to save $200 on a rebuild than to have it done right the first time.

As I continue to discover that I am not the only one with a lame A4LD...Is there a after market comprehensive kit to provide for the requirements of a rebuild; a ford transmission that will swap direclty in place of the A4LD; or a trustworthy firm that rebuilds and ships?...overseas (I'm stationed in Italy and the mountains have devastated anything that could be considered a seal at the front of the tranny--It leaks like buckets uphill)...

Contact Doug, with Dougs Transmissions in Arizona. He will ship. He is a Ford transmission expert. His # is 1-480-964-3832. Tell him I sent you. He can build you a tranny as strong as you like.
